The purpose of this position is to provide specialized legal representation to the City and to provide legal training and assistance to the City departments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Litigates cases on behalf of City and/or supervises and directs litigators in judiciary and administrative proceedings.
Provides legal support and advice to department heads, management, administrative staff, and other City staff.
Drafts, researched and reviews resolutions, court documents, deeds, leases and other legal documents and instruments.
Drafts, reviews and negotiates contracts and settlements of disputes.
Drafts and interprets City ordinances, rules and regulations.
Responds to requests for information from the general public, City staff and outside agencies.
Facilitates major property acquisitions for City projects, including reviewing title work, document preparation and condemnations.
Develops and presents educational and training programs for City staff.

Valid North Carolina Driver's License
North Carolina Bar License in good standing
Admission to practice in North Carolina state courts
Admission to practice in federal courts including the United States for the Middle District of North Carolina

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, bending, hearing, and talking.
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly AND/OR walking or standing to a significant degree.

Required Experience
Juris Doctor from an American Bar Association Accredited Law School, with at least one (1) year of experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
