Duties

The Assistant chief, Dental Service in conjunction with the Chief of Dental is responsible but not limited to the following:

Ensuring that the facility dental program complies with VHA regulations, directives, handbooks, and policies pertaining to dental clinic operations. He/She is also responsible for developing local procedures.

Ensuring the presenting Veterans are evaluated for eligibility to receive dental care from VA, appropriately classified and rated for purposes of disability compensation if eligible and receive the appropriate level of dental evaluation and treatment consistent with their dental classification and standards of good dental practice.

Ensures dental care is delivered in accordance with hospital policy, meeting or exceeding community standards and VHA national benchmarks.

In the absence of the Chief, the Assistant Dental Chief will have primary responsibility for supervising other dentists and professional staff in the Service, and to ensure they are performing to the highest standards of clinical care excellence, time efficiency, professional and ethical behavior.

Assures that dental care of patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings are smooth, patient centric and safe. This includes but is not limited to, collaboration and good communication with the Emergency Department, Subspecialty Services, Clinics in all areas of the medical center and the Veterans' Service Center.

In the absence of the Chief, supervises all operational aspects of the Dental Service, including establishment of the highest clinical care standards, operations, and quality; as well as daily functioning of the Dental suite in order to maintain efficient and cost-effective provision of services while maintaining a high standard of patientcare.

Develops strong, collegial working relationships with other leaders within the medical center (both clinical and administrative), and with other service Chiefs/section heads.

Participates in clinical review process such as tort claims, peer reviews, management reviews and administrative activities, as directed by the Chief of Staff.

Involved as a leader in the organization's continued accreditation readiness activities.

Fosters a culture of transparency, communication, collegiality, and patient centered interdisciplinary teamwork.

He/she will use astute business acumen to optimally utilize resources and adapt to changes, exercising leadership and flexibility.

The Assistant Dental Chief is expected to maintain current medical knowledge and technical skills and provides both leadership and documentation that all dentists within the Service are competent with respect to current privileging within the Dental Service. He/she is expected to maintain excellent diagnostic, judgmental, and therapeutic acumen in the care of veterans receiving anesthesiology interventions.

The position will require excellent diagnostic skills and the ability to triage, diagnose, and manage a broad spectrum of urgent and chronic dental problems in patient population with a high percentage of medically compromised individuals.

Provide professional guidance to dental hygienists and dental laboratory technicians.

Practice mentorship to the dental team.

Practice in accordance with accepted professional, organizational values, and with a commitment to excellent customer service.

Incumbent should possess computer skills, good work ethics, administrative skills, and be able to function productively in a clinical environment.

Dentist Basic Requirements

  • Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with section A, chapter 3, paragraph 3g, this part.)
  • Education: A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
  • Residency. Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
  • License. Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.

Leadership/Manager Positions.

Dentist leadership and management positions may be Section Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, Service Chiefs, VISN Lead Dentists, Service Line Managers, Central Office Program Positions, Chiefs of Staff, or Directors (i.e., medical center and Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN)). Dentists in leadership positions must demonstrate outstanding professional ability in the practice of dentistry or a dental specialty, and healthcare administration, as well as the ability to guide the development and implementation of programs within their respective domain. These would include, but are not limited to dental practice, professional standards, personnel issues, quality and performance improvement.

Preferred Experience: One year of supervisory experience in a medical setting.

References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-3 Dentist Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Extended computer work is involved for both management requirements, and basic dentistry requirements. The dentist must also demonstrate average dexterity in manipulating dental instruments for the evaluation of patients. Work involves recurring exposure to the hazards of radiation and communicable diseases. The dentist uses face mask, gloves, gowns, and goggles during the performance of clinical evaluations.

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
