Assistant Bus Mechanic

To assist in a variety of diesel and small engines; to independently perform routine mechanical repair and maintenance work. They assist in tasks such as repairing and installing new parts like turbos, air compressors, alternators, and starters. Shop maintenance is also part of their responsibility, including keeping all tools in their proper place and cleaning the workspace for a safe environment. They also help with routine maintenance tasks like oil changes, brake repairs, and tire replacements.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventative maintenance on autos, buses, and other internal combustion equipment.

  • Check and top off all fluids in the buses weekly as needed.

  • Inspect tools and equipment to ensure that they are working properly.

  • Help maintain a clean shop and return tools to proper locations.

  • Change and repair tires, install and service batteries, spark plugs, light bulbs, fan belts and other simple mechanical parts.

  • Assist the mechanic in the performance of mechanical repairs as required.

  • Assist in the repair of the shop equipment

  • Assist with service calls for bus breakdowns

  • Wash, polish, and detail autos and buses.

  • Repair minor vehicle damage; replace broken windows; touch up minor scrapes and dents; clean, repair upholstery.

  • Test drive vehicles to ensure repairs are properly completed.

  • Assist in inventory of parts and equipment

  • Responsible for opening and/or closing shop, and early morning start-ups

  • Assist, as needed, with the transportation of students.

  • Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by the corporation.

  • With the support of the school corporation, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies are at the level required to perform in current position.

  • Performs other maintenance related work as required

  • If needed to drive a bus route with students.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods, inspect and service buses.

Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling, hearing conversations and other sounds (air leaks, rattles, etc.) near/far visual acuity/depth perception. Lifting 50 lbs.

  • Exposure to gasoline vapors and mechanics fluids.

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Maintain a CDL Class B with DOT physicals and Annual State Bus Training and evidence of insurability, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, Drug/Alcohol Testing Clearance.

  • Skills to operate school buses and vans in a safe manner, communicate effectively, evaluate schedules and meet deadlines.

  • Knowledge of vehicle operation, basic maintenance requirements and driving codes.

  • Abilities to sit for prolonged periods, understand and carry out oral and written instructions, supervise students; maintain order; understand and address students with special needs, work independently, make common sense decisions in potentially critical situations.

  • Ability to use hand and power tools.

Full Time Posiiton with Benefits

Salary: $26.00 per hour
