FUNCTION:

The High School Assistant Band Director is under the direct supervision of the principal of the school to which the band director is assigned. With the approval of the principal and under the guidance of the Fine Arts Specialist for band, the High School Assistant Band Director is responsible for assisting the High School Band Director in determining and implementing the secondary band program and related activities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIREMENTS:

Teacher Duties

  • Plans for successful student learning of daily objectives that include basic knowledge and skills, and central concepts of the discipline.

  • Ensures students are engaged and successful in learning, critical thinking and problem solving.

  • Utilizes multiple models of instruction, assessment and effective teaching practices.

  • Utilizes State TEKS and District Curriculum to design engaging lessons which are challenging, high quality and appropriate for the level of instruction.

  • Maintains current accurate records of daily attendance and textbooks issued.

  • Able to effectively manage time and materials.

  • Accepts related assignments as requested by principals.

  • Instructs classes in the subject area(s) assigned.

  • Is responsible for the use and care of available instructional materials.

  • Maintains current records of student grades and progress.

  • Accurately evaluates and assesses performance of students in subject/s taught.

  • Confers regularly with parents on student progress.

  • Fulfills related responsibilities, e.g., reporting grades, exams, field trips, and programs.

  • Maintains classroom discipline that allows for student learning, safety and teaches individual responsibility.

  • Analyzes data and information from assessments and utilizes it for individualizing instruction.

  • Identifies students that are at-risk of failing the subject or grade.

  • Appropriately plans for remediation and intervention for students identified as at-risk.

  • Appropriately modifies and accommodates student's needs based on IEP goals and 504 accommodations.

  • Works cooperatively with the campus librarian in the selection of materials appropriate to the subject area.

  • Encourages reluctant and struggling learners.

  • Provides positive/constructive feedback and reinforces student learning.

  • Is positive and courteous to students, parents, fellow educators and the community.

  • Maintains and cares for all equipment and furniture.

  • Meets deadlines as requested.

  • Uses effective leadership techniques.

  • Follows campus, district, and state policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrates self-direction in professional growth.

  • Communicates professionally with students, parents, educators, and the community.

  • Responsible for the academic success of students assigned.

  • Responsible for determining and participating in professional development goals and activities that are aligned with the needs of the students, prior performance appraisal, as well as, the goals of the campus and district.

SCHEDULE OF DUTIES AND ACTIVITIES OF HIGH SCHOOL ASSISTANT BAND DIRECTOR. The following seasonal calendar is an approximation and subject to yearly changes. The duties are subject to approval and modification by the principal.

August

  • Assists in conducting a summer band program of not fewer than ten days.

  • Issues uniforms and equipment to band members.

  • Plans and outlines activities for approaching school year.

  • Selects music and instructional materials for use in approaching school year.

  • Begins team-teaching band classes within the band unit system.

September/October/November

  • Helps plan and prepares performance materials for pep rallies and football games.

  • Assists with marching band performances at all varsity football games involving school.

  • Assists students with preparation for All-District and All-Region Band competitions.

  • Begins preparation for University Interscholastic League (UIL) Marching Contest. (See note.)

  • Participates in UIL Twirling Solo and Ensemble Contest. (See note.)

  • Plans and prepares for All-Region Jazz Band tryouts.

  • Plans and prepares for All-Region Orchestra tryouts.

  • Helps prepare marching band for Halftime Showcase.

  • Continues team-teaching band classes within the band unit system.

December

  • Participates in Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-District and All-Region Band auditions. (See note.)

  • Plans, prepares, and performs a holiday season (winter) concert or program.

  • Assists students with selections of solo and ensemble contest materials.

  • Begins making contacts in middle schools to retain students in band program.

  • Plans and prepares for All-Region Band clinic.

  • Continues team-teaching band classes within the band unit system.

January

  • Participates in All-Area Band auditions, if applicable. (See note.)

  • Assists students with preparation of solo and ensemble contest materials.

  • Begins selection of concert contest music.

  • Continues recruitment from middle schools.

  • Continues team-teaching band classes within the band unit system.

February

  • Continues to assist students with preparations of solo and ensemble materials.

  • Participates in UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest. (See note.)

  • Continues recruitment from middle school, and reports results to all persons concerned.

  • Actively works on concert and sightreading contest materials.

  • Attends annual TMEA Clinic-Convention, if possible.

  • Continues team-teaching band classes within the band unit system.

  • Actively participates in All-City Middle School Band auditions, rehearsals, and clinic/concert.

March/April

  • Participates in UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest and Concert Band Showcase. (See note.)

  • Participates in Buccaneer Days activities (parade).

  • Assists middle school bands with preparation for UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest and Concert Band Showcase.

  • Continues team-teaching band classes within the band system.

May

  • Helps prepare and present a spring end-of-year program or concert if one has not already been performed.

  • Participates in commencement exercises as prescribed by principal.

  • Helps prepare an inventory of equipment and music.

  • Arranges for repair of equipment as needed during summer break.

  • Participates in State Solo and Ensemble Contest, if applicable.

  • Continues team-teaching band classes within the band unit system.

  • NOTE: Participation in all UIL, TMEA, and District-sponsored contests, showcases, and festivals is expected. Participation is defined as (a) entering students for competition in the event, if applicable; and (b) assisting with supervising, administering, or judging as assigned by contest or festival chairperson.

CONTINUING DUTIES

  • Assists with audition and placement of students in band program, and communicates results to all persons concerned.

  • Assists with selection of students for position of drum major, color guard, twirler, or other appropriate auxiliary groups.

  • Works with High School Band Director to oversee repair and constant maintenance of school-owned instruments and equipment assigned to band.

  • Works with High School Band Director to oversee care, upkeep, and cataloging of band music library.

  • With cooperation by principals involved, assists in coordinating team-teaching with middle school band directors. (High and middle school principals will make time available for team- teaching to encourage a continuing program for Grades 6-12.)

  • To accomplish seasonal duties previously mentioned, it is necessary for the High School Assistant Band Director to arrange practice time before and after school. Therefore, the High School Assistant Band Director should normally expect to spend some two hours or more extra time before and/or after school each day working with sections, full band, or individuals as situations dictate. Supplementary pay has been included in High School Assistant Band Director's salary as compensation for extra time.

  • Teaches in such a way that students develop a high caliber of musicianship and knowledge about music to prepare them for full enjoyment of their own performances and performances of others, as well as increase students' abilities to compete successfully for scholarships or to pursue careers in music.

  • Helps prepare and issue handbook on band policies, regulations, and procedures. Handbook must be congruent with District policies, rules, and regulations. Formulation of band handbook must be approved by principal prior to issuance to students. Parents of band students and band members are required to sign handbook to indicate understanding and acceptance of band policies, regulations, and procedures. Handbook includes all aspects of the band program.

  • Remains current on rules and regulations governing UIL and TMEA music competitions.

  • Attends all meetings called during school year by the Fine Arts Specialist for band.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by principal.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Limited in-District travel

  • Light lifting

  • Out-of-District, overnight supervision of students

  • Supervision of students in exterior environments
