Job Duties

This individual will manage the Predatory Lending Unit of the Consumer Protection Section, whose staff members investigate and prosecute suspected violations of state and federal consumer lending statutes, including statutes that address payday/short-term loans, motor vehicle title loans, consumer finance loans, open-end credit plan loans, mortgage loans, mortgage servicing, and foreclosure rescue services. The Unit Manager also will carry a caseload with responsibility to investigate and prosecute suspected violations of these statutes.

In addition, this individual will have responsibility for investigating and prosecuting violations of other state and federal consumer protection laws, including the Virginia Consumer Protection Act. This position reports to the Consumer Protection Section Chief. Must have excellent writing skills and be prepared to appear in the appropriate state or federal court in actions filed against alleged violators. Will also periodically provide legal advice to the Office of Charitable and Regulatory Programs, assist in drafting official opinions, review proposed legislation, and work with counterparts in other states and federal agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and manage complex enforcement cases; well-developed oral and written communication skills; the ability to motivate, coach, lead, and manage personnel; and the ability to interact effectively with state/federal government officials, a diverse workforce, and the general public.

  • Must be admitted to the Virginia State Bar.

Additional Considerations

Ideal candidate will have a minimum of 8 to 15 years of litigation experience in state and federal courts, concentrating on consumer finance or consumer protection matters.
