UNIVERSITY of MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY

SCHOOL of SCIENCE and ENGINEERING

Division of Energy, Matter and Systems / Electrical and Computer Engineering

The School of Science and Engineering recently added a new 58,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility for $40 million to support multidisciplinary education, research, and economic development initiatives. Some of the key components of this new facility are NextGen Data Science and Analytics Innovation Center (dSAIC), Augmented and Virtual Reality Lab, Robotics Lab, Motion Capture Lab, UAV & Drone Lab, Innovation Studio & 3D Printing Lab, and High-Performance Computing Lab. In addition to the BS (ABET-accredited), MS, and Ph.D. programs, the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) under the Division of Energy, Matter and Systems (EMS) of the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) plays key roles in several new interdisciplinary degree programs in Biomedical Engineering and Cybersecurity. https://sse.umkc.edu/about-us/index.html

The ECE faculty has undergone exciting growth in recent years. The Faculty of ECE holds the record for the most active research grants per tenure-system faculty on the UMKC Campus.

In addition to individual single-PI grants and projects, the Faculties of ECE have many collaborative and multidisciplinary projects. The Faculty of ECE has been instrumental in the establishment and continued success of the Missouri Institute of Defense and Energy (MIDE), which has become one of the most successful platforms in the entire University of Missouri System regarding sponsored research and academia-industry-government agency collaboration. MIDE is founded on bridging fundamental physics with applied engineering to solve longstanding challenges in the defense, energy, and related commercial sectors.

As of 2021, MIDE has secured $50M in externally awarded grants and contracts. UMKC is the first university in the country to sign a cooperative research and development agreement with the United States Cyber Command. In 2015, MIDE was presented with the R&D100 award for a defense technology that led to two small businesses and two licensed patents.

Two MIDE faculty received the Intel Outstanding Researcher award for their work on next-generation transistors. They are the only University of Missouri System recipients since the award's inauguration in 2012.

Job Description

To support the remarkable developments and future growth opportunities, UMKC has decided to launch a cluster hiring initiative within the Division of Energy, Matter and Systems (EMS). The EMS Division includes the Faculties of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Chemistry (CHEM), and Physics & Astronomy (P&A). As part of this cluster hiring, the EMS Division is seeking applications for one (1) tenure-track/tenured faculty position in RF & Electromagnetics under the Faculty of ECE at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level, starting in January 2025.

Areas of interest for the Signal Processing Position: The University of Missouri-Kansas City is seeking candidates in the broad area of Systems and Signal Processing.

Candidates with backgrounds and expertise in all emerging domains of signal processing sciences and technologies that have strong prospects of extending our sponsored research program are highly encouraged to apply. Signal processing for emerging domains is expected to provide continuous external funding for novel solutions and insights for domains that require high-dimensional, heterogeneous, nonlinear, or dynamic signals, such as quantum information, neuroscience, bioinformatics, and nanotechnology. Some specific areas of interest are (but are not limited to) radar signal processing, sonar signal processing, statistical signal processing, signal processing for quantum computing, distributed signal processing (processing of signals generated and collected by multiple agents, such sensors, cameras, or vehicles), neural signal processing, genomic signal processing, molecular signal processing, and biomedical signal processing. Successful applicants will have access to the state-of-the-art lab facilities at the SSE, EMS, and the Missouri Institute of Defense and Energy (MIDE). These facilities include several multidisciplinary labs and centers that have supported $50M in externally awarded grants and contracts from various federal agencies, including NSF and DOD.

Qualifications

The candidates must have a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering or a closely related discipline. The successful candidates are expected to:

(1) develop and sustain an extramurally funded research program;

(2) have a strong commitment to teaching courses in the department's undergraduate and graduate programs;

(3) engage in departmental, school, or university services appropriate to the position; and (4) advance the goals and strategic plan of UMKC.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications, experience and evidence of success in externally funded research. This is a 9-month, benefit-eligible, full-time (1.0) faculty appointment eligible for tenure. This is a mid-year hire to begin January 2025 with a tenure-track start in Fall 2025.

Your total compensation goes beyond the number on your paycheck. The University of Missouri provides generous leave, health plans, and retirement contributions that add to your bottom line. Our academic workloads and schedules promote a positive work/life balance.
