Job Description:

The Department of Pathobiological Sciences (PBS) at the Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Veterinary Anatomic Pathologist for a full-time clinical track faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. The position is primarily focused on diagnostic service coverage at the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (LADDL) including necropsies and biopsies.

Candidates are also expected to teach in the veterinary professional and PBS graduate curriculum, as well as in the Residency Training Program in Anatomic Pathology, with emphasis in pathology (e.g., general pathology and systemic anatomic pathology). Training of residents, contributing to scholarly activity, and leadership within the department are also expected.

The anatomic pathology service is an integral part of the LADDL, which also hosts laboratories for diagnostics in virology, bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, serology, toxicology and molecular biology.

About the Department of Pathobiological Sciences:

The Department of Pathobiological Sciences (PBS) features well-funded research programs in virology, bacteriology, parasitology, epidemiology, immunology and pathology and cancer biology. Additional programs exist with opportunities for collaboration within the School of Veterinary Medicine and with faculty from across other Louisiana institutions, including Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Tulane National Primate Research Center, and LSU Health Sciences Center-New Orleans. The Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) and University core facilities support animal care, advanced microscopy and imaging, laser capture microdissection, multispectral imaging, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, flow cytometry-FACS, genomic sequencing and functional genomics and system biology.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Service: This is a primarily diagnostic service-oriented position (minimum of 70% service effort [36 weeks of diagnostic service per calendar year]). This is predominantly diagnostic service under the auspices of the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (LADDL). This includes performing animal necropsies, histopathology, and coordinating the ancillary laboratory testing.

    The service for LADDL also includes reading and reporting of biopsy cases. In both services, the pathologist is the case coordinator responsible for the case write-up, ultimate diagnosis (if applicable) and case finalization. The pathologist is responsible for adhering to the LADDL quality system and guiding the residents and students during diagnostic service. A small component includes PBS departmental service, such as SVM or university committee work.

  • Teaching: Teaching in the professional and graduate curricula in veterinary pathology is expected.

    The participation in the professional curriculum will take place under a newly established DVM curriculum and cover topics in General and Systemic Pathology. Additionally, it will include the Diagnostic Pathology rotation, which occurs year-round. Coordination of one or more courses may be expected.

    Teaching in the resident/graduate courses including Advanced Systemic Pathology, Cellular Pathology, Wednesday Slide Conference, Journal Club is also expected.

    Teaching also includes the one-on-one training of residents in the Anatomic Pathology residency program at PBS and LADDL.

  • Scholarly activity: Significant scholarly activity includes publication of peer-reviewed manuscripts and presentations of research or diagnostic works at national meetings. Collaborative research within the department, university, or outside entities is also encouraged.

Assistant Professor (Clinical Track)

Minimum Qualifications:

DVM with a minimum of 3 years of postgraduate specialty experience and focused peer reviewed scholarly activity. A record of participation in extramurally funded research and peer-reviewed publications.

Degree Substitute

  • VMD, DMV, or BVSc

Specific Experience

  • Board eligible or diplomate status in anatomic pathology from the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP).

Preferred Qualifications:

Specific Experience

  • A record of significant participation in research activities, diagnostic pathology, didactic instruction, and scholarly activity in the form of peer-reviewed publications in the field of pathology.

Associate Professor (Clinical Track)

Minimum Qualifications:

DVM with a minimum 6 years of postgraduate specialty experience and focused peer reviewed scholarly activity. A record of participation in extramurally funded research and peer-reviewed publications.

Degree Substitute

  • VMD, DMV, or BVSc

Specific Experience

  • Diplomate status in anatomic pathology from the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). National recognition in the specific field with a significant scholarly activity record in the form of peer-reviewed publications in the field of pathology, significant participation in research activities, diagnostic pathology, didactic instruction, and other activities related to the profession (e.g. memberships and leadership positions in associations related to the field [AAVLD, ACVP, others], panel member, editorial board member, etc.).

Full Professor (Clinical Track)

Minimum Qualifications:

DVM with a minimum 12 years of postgraduate specialty experience and focused peer reviewed scholarly activity. A significant record of participation in extramurally funded research and peer-reviewed publications.

Degree Substitute

  • VMD, DMV, or BVSc

Specific Experience

  • Diplomate status in anatomic pathology from the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). National and international recognition in the specific field with a broad scholarly activity record in the form of peer-reviewed publications in the field of pathology, significant participation in research activities, diagnostic pathology, didactic instruction, and other activities related to the profession (e.g. memberships and leadership positions in associations related to the field [AAVLD, ACVP, others], panel member, editorial board member, etc.). Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills are essential for the position.
