The Crown Illustrated Art Department is looking for an Assistant Art Director with a passion for board books and young picture books to join their team. Working across the Waterbrook, Multnomah and Convergent imprints, you will help develop and oversee all art and design aspects of our Christian Children's publishing program. Partnering with the Creative Director and Publisher on every project from conception through to completion, the ideal candidate will appreciate the importance of and find value in the children's book category.

Responsibilities include:

  • Art directing and assigning the design of every book, interior and package, across our three imprints.

  • Working with the Creative Director on finding the right artist for every potential manuscript, or the right project for every artist of interest.

  • Maintaining a current sense of design trends and the aesthetic zeitgeist and seeking out up-and-coming artists of interest.

  • Working with our Publishers, Production Manager and the Creative Director to advise on book formats regarding what size, shape, material, etc. best suits each project and the market.

  • Cultivating relationships with illustration agents in order to find new talent and acquire projects.

  • Maintaining a current sense of the children's book marketplace and determine areas of opportunity.

  • Maintaining familiarity with our target audience to understand consumer needs and preferences.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in the field of design within a child-related industry

  • Knowledge of and appreciation for children's books, which include board books, picture books, and middle-grade readers

  • Incredibly high standards of design and finished product

  • Ability to be a team player and work collaboratively with in-house colleagues, external artists, and authors

  • Proven ability to incorporate and implement feedback

  • Exceptional attention to detail

  • Excellent writing and communication skills

  • Interest in falling down e-rabbit holes to find new talent, new sources, and new inspiration

  • Full competency with the Adobe Creative Suite

  • Project management experience a plus, but not mandatory
