The Shelby location is Clearwater Paper's newest consumer products facility, boasting two paper mills located on 400 acres with over 600 talented employees. We are proud to produce a variety of high-quality premium and ultra-premium bathroom tissue, household paper towels, and napkins for major retail outlets throughout the United States. Our state-of-the-art technology includes 10 converting lines, 54 laser-guided vehicles, and 2 paper machines producing large quantities at high speed. Shelby, North Carolina is a quaint community located between bustling downtown Charlotte and scenic Asheville. The town is a stone's throw from Gastonia, Belmont, and Kings Mountain. Shelby's art, music, and government community take place in the Uptown Shelby historic district. Uptown Shelby is home to a large square, local businesses, and a variety of restaurants surrounding The Courthouse Square. The local pavilion hosts weekly Farmer's markets and weekend concerts. What you will do:

Safety

  • Responsible for area safety and assist with all area safety efforts. Participate or review all safety incidents and investigate root cause. Ensure follow-up items are completed in a timely manner.

  • Help support the behavioural safety program and ensure that safe work practices are followed.

  • Lead safety initiatives and provide safety training to ensure safe work practices are followed and enforced.

  • Work to eliminate employee interactions with equipment.

  • Address safety concerns with urgency.

  • Ensure environmental compliance.

  • Responsible for ensuring proper Lockout/tagout program and upkeep

Quality

  • Maintain and improve quality standards for all products produced.

  • Ensure quality checks/floor audits happen

  • Support product development activities, including trials

  • Lead and support all GMP Audits

  • Lead quality initiatives and support change to ensure satisfied downstream customers.

  • Follow up with rejected product to ensure timely disposition.

Production

  • Sets goals and objectives for production area

  • Coaches the department in the right behaviors

  • Ensures the department works to standards (Safety, Quality, …)

  • Develops the required standards

  • Coaches and facilitate losses elimination by using problem solving tools

  • Assures the problems are solved (root cause) and tasks are implemented in a sustainable way

  • Defines and executes improvement projects and Approval For Capital Expenditure (AFCE) needs to support 1-5 year plans

  • Owns the Daily Operating Review (DOR)/Weekly Operating Review (WOR)

  • Ensures effective communication and results review through the meeting sequence (Shift Hand Off [SHO], DOR, WOR)

  • Ensures the business unit works to standards such as safety and quality

  • Accountable for the business unit operational budget

  • Defines and executes improvement projects for production area

  • Ensures effective communication and results review through site operational meetings

Leadership

  • Mentor shift supervisors to ensure quality leadership of hourly personnel.

  • Provide leadership coverage during the Superintendent's absence.

  • Conduct investigations of safety incidents with shift supervisors and hourly personnel.

  • Develop team in areas of safety, quality, production and overall plant efficiency

  • Ensure employee compliance with schedules, policies and procedures.

  • Assist in developing and implementing job-specific training program, Qual-card and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).

  • Support capital budget process.

  • Creates an environment oriented to trust, open communication, creative thinking, and cohesive team work

  • Assists in performance management process of hourly employees and direct reports in the immediate production area

  • Coaches and develop team members and individuals to assure a sustained leadership pipeline (including 1:1 meetings)

  • Assists in the motivation and morale of the production area to achieve the expected goals

  • Collaborates with other areas internal and external to the site

What you will need:

  • High school diploma or GED required. B.S. Chemical Engineer or Pulp and Paper science preferred.

  • Minimum of three (3) years in an operations leadership role in a Paper or Consumer Packaged Goods processing facility.

  • Strong coaching and mentoring skills with experience in leading change

  • Excellent communication skills, comfortable presenting up to senior level audiences

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

  • Excellent planning and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks.

  • Self-directed and energetic, able to lead and motivate others.

  • Knowledge of industry, machinery, equipment and processes.

  • Advanced systems aptitude and excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, ParcView or similar, experience with CMMS such as JD Edwards or similar

  • Area is loud, hot with multiple slipping, tripping and falling hazards, as well as in running nips and suspended loads.

  • Potential Exposure to Compressed air, steam, hazardous chemicals, lubrication oil, and hydraulic exposure.

  • High speed manufacturing environment, sustained exposure to high frequency noises, multiple hours standing, and walking on concrete surfaces

  • Personal Protective Equipment required in mill environment.

  • Dirt, noise, odor, & temperature extremes.

  • Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding

Total Reward Details:

The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience among other factors. Benefits are generally available after 30 days and include medical, dental, vision, life, disability coverage, employee assistance program, and a 401k plan. Paid time off will include vacation days, personal days, and company holidays.
