Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

The mission of the Office of Assessment, Accreditation, and Academic Program Planning (OAAAPP) is to support the University by leading activities related to University-wide accreditation and institutional effectiveness.

To accomplish its mission, OAAAPP provides consultation, training, and administrative and technical support related to assessment, including General Education; internal and external academic program change procedures; SACSCOC compliance; and strategic planning activities for faculty and staff.

Position Summary

The Assessment Coordinator will advocate for best practices and manage institutional effectiveness activities related to general education and support assessment processes related to academic programs. The ideal person for this position would have experience designing and implementing a General Education assessment program and monitoring its progress related to accreditation, as well as broad knowledge of academic assessment in higher education. They will be able to conduct statistical analyses of assessment data, and they will produce online resources to educate and communicate about assessment activities. This person's first priority will be to work in collaboration with the General Education Council to manage the assessment process for the new Gen Ed program that began in fall 2021. This person will also support the long-standing academic assessment process, working with faculty and support staff on individual efforts and the Student Learning Enhancement Committee on institution-wide continuous improvements in assessment processes. The Coordinator will report to the Associate Vice Provost and Director of Assessment, Accreditation, and Academic Program Planning.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • General Education Assessment processes: Establish a consistent assessment process for the General Education program, called Minerva's Academic Curriculum (MAC). The university has as assessment process, based on application of rubrics, that needs to be maintained and enhanced as needed. Processes need to be defined with support of the faculty, documented, and supported throughout the life of the MAC.

  • Data Gathering Activities: Work collaboratively with faculty, staff and administrators to gather evidence of student learning achievement in the General Education program, called Minerva's Academic Curriculum (MAC). Guide faculty, staff, and administrators with sound assessment and data collection methodologies. Collect data on a regular schedule to ensure the University's ability to regularly evaluate the MAC.

  • Assessment Support: Work with the Director to review academic programs. Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators to support current assessment activities and to assist in the measurement and use of program learning evidence. Help guide faculty, staff, and administrators toward sound assessment methodologies and data collection.

  • Assessment Resources: Produce resources for assessment of learning. Maintain an online presence related to academic assessment for campus.

  • Analysis of Data Sets: Determine, in conjunction with others, the most appropriate statistical analyses and conduct statistical analysis of data sets for the General Education program (MAC) and interpret analyses for technical and non-technical users.

  • Documentation of Assessment: Prepare written reports of professional quality for dissemination within the university. Prepare oral presentations of data results and findings as needed. Present data and analysis to a variety of internal and external audiences as needed. Maintain assessment documentation for the general education program. Contribute to accreditation responses.

  • Committee service: Serve on committees as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and two to four years of related experience, Master's degree with statistical data analysis/assessment experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Two or more years of experience in general education and academic assessment, program evaluation, or institutional research.

  • Ability to effectively work both independently and cooperatively in a team environment.

  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • High degree of accuracy and excellent attention to detail.

  • Excellent decision making and organization skills; productive time management.

  • Professional commitment to responsibly secure and maintain confidential information.

  • Understanding of current issues in general education assessment, academic program assessment, and trends in higher education.

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications

Earned Master's degree in program evaluation, assessment, measurement, educational research, psychology or related field desired. Candidates with a doctoral degree in one of these academic disciplines or a related field preferred.

General Education Assessment Management

Essential Tasks

  • Establish a consistent process for assessment of the new General Education program, Minerva's Academic Curriculum (MAC). Establish an assessment cycle that ensures all student learning competencies in the program are assessed periodically.

  • Manage Gen Ed assessment processes. Collect evidence and develop a repository of data.

  • Analyze data. Work with other entities on campus such as the Office of Institutional Research to interpret Gen Ed data and student learning in the program. Provide faculty evidence and information to understand outcomes and identify approaches to improving learning.

  • Communicate about the Gen Ed program. Produce written reports related to Gen Ed assessment. Present results to audiences across campus, including the General Education Council.

  • Contribute to preparing accreditation responses related to Gen Ed assessment.

Academic Program Assessment

Essential Tasks

  • Support academic assessment activities. Work with faculty and staff to identify good assessment practices within individual academic programs at undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Work with the Office's team to produce assessment report templates for distribution to campus. Reports are individualized for each program based on direction from the program coordinators. The Office edits and formats assessment report components for distribution and then submitted reports for review by the Student Learning Enhancement Committee.

  • Evaluate academic assessment reports. Work with the Student Learning Enhancement Committee and Director to annually review reports submitted by academic program coordinators. Contribute to criteria for evaluation. Contribute to meta-analysis of academic assessment processes and results for the University.

  • Produce resources for academic assessment. This may include written instructions or videos. Maintain an online presence related to academic assessment for campus.

  • Produce written reports that explain results of General Education assessment to faculty, staff, students, and administrators.

  • Present processes and results to audiences of faculty, staff, students, and administrators.

  • Communicate with individuals and groups in meetings to explain assessment processes. Listen to their needs in order to help them develop assessment practices appropriate for their programs.

  • Draft communications to various audiences on campus about assessment processes.

  • Produce materials that explain assessment practices and processes for various audience. Maintain these materials on the office's website.

  • Write accreditation responses that explain the University's compliance with accrediting standards related to General Education and education program assessment of learning.
