Job Description:

Builds and/or mates structures where the assembly is coordinated, or built with the benefit of tooling with established primary locations, and as necessary, lays out and locates rivet, bolt and fastener hole patterns, trim lines, and parts from established locations by simple measurement. Works the assembly in proper sequence, loads jig, and does necessary work and/or rework to complete the assembly, either in or after removal from jig.

Performs such operations as minor reforming of parts to correct contour; crimping, trimming and filing parts to fit; framing, skinning, riveting; attaching fittings and installations required to obtain a finished assembly. Drills and reams to specified (not "exacting") tolerances.

Mills rivets as required. May improvise shop aids to facilitate assembly and installation.

Performs any type of routine or repetitive installation work involving bolting, screwing, clipping or riveting, in attaching or locating electrical, hydraulic, plumbing or mechanical units, parts, assemblies or equipment where their location is determined by pilot holes, back drilling, templates, previously punched or drilled holes, and as necessary, lays out by simple measurement from specific reference points such as edge, located holes, ribs, stringers, or other installed units. Torques and/or safeties bolts as required. When required by practical assembly sequence, installs incidential plumbing, electrical rigging or other functional items.

Installs under conditions described above, such typical items as: (1) Braces, brackets, platenuts, and clips for fastening, hanging, or supporting installations; (2) conduit, junction boxes; instrument panels; wire harnesses completely assembled, or single wires, requiring cutting, lugging, forming, trying, but not requiring soldering; (3) tubing for hydraulic, plumbing, and air conditioning systems; (4) cables, drums, pulley assemblies, push pull rods, and linkage, etc; (5) mechanical units such as tracks, hinges, up locks, down locks, etc.; (6) sealing compounds, insulation, rubber, felt, gaskets, or other material to aircraft parts; (7) floor supports, floor boards, stands, and similar items; (8) bonding, but does not perform bonding checking operations; (9) miscellaneous items such as fuel and oil tanks, cabinets, partitions, seats, metal molding, aircraft hardware, oxygen bottles, water breakers, alcohol units, storage equipment, etc.

Modifies incomplete and complete assemblies to incorporate in or out-of-station changes to structure and/or installations when pertinent information is supplied and normal installation practice is not affected.

Disassembles and/or reassembles structure and installations where units are essentially returned to their original position, or where their position previously has been established. May improvise shop aid to facilitate assembly and installation.

Fabricates structural items, such as clips, angles, gussets, and patches, etc.

Makes leak check of components, or system as required (not hydraulic operation). May furnish information to authorized liaison personnel, regarding defective parts, tooling or assemblies, or incorrect assembly sequence.

Works from production, pre-release, check, detail assembly and installation blueprints, D.A.T.'s, sketches or other authorized documents.

Performs pick-up and structural repair/rework work wherein the operations are essentially the same as required for the work described above.

At the start of employment, you will be required to attend a skills training program, and take and pass a performance demonstration test following completion.

Basic Qualifications

Two years of aircraft sheet metal assembly (riveted structure and installation of functional and/or electrical components) experience or equivalent training. This should include the ability to drill and rivet thin sheet metal and the ability to read and use aircraft detail and assembly blueprints.

To apply an elementary knowledge of aircraft assembly, structures assembly and installation practice and procedure. To apply an elementary knowledge of the working characteristics of aircraft materials.

To use necessary jigs, fixtures, rivet upsetting, assembly equipment, and hand tools. To read and interpret detail, assembly and installation blueprints, or other authorized documents to obtain structure assembly and installation information and material callouts. To use applicable measuring devices.

To use arithmetic through decimals and fractions. To work to tolerances as required for the type of work described herein. To make repairs from authorized repair manuals, or other authorized documents.

OR

Candidates with a completed Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) Licenses acquired through completion of accredited courses of study from aeronautical technical institutions with course curriculums such as Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics, Spartan School of Aeronautics, Embry Riddle, and Aviation Institute of Maintenance of Duluth.

Works structural changes which materially alter previous assembly references and practice. Performs trimming, reforming and altering parts and structures as required. Fabricates detail parts such as shims, splices, gussets, angles, brackets, doublers, stiffeners and patches. Performs portable milling operations on wing and center section attaching joints. Must be able to layout and secure coordination of assemblies working to station, water, center, butt, and chord lines shown on engineering documents. When required, works from blueprints or other authorized documents where complete information is not readily available and/or with inadequate tooling, or without aid of tooling. Works from production, pre- release, check, detail, assembly and installation blueprints, D.A.T.'s sketches or other authorized documents. Lays out and locates structural components or assemblies in making production installations as specified by design changes, working from blueprints or other authorized documents. Performs such final assembly operations as pick-up and rework on structures and installations, installing shortages, and bringing up all items to latest engineering changes. In addition, makes corrections of a mechanical nature on plumbing, electrical, controls, and power plant installations. Operates controls for free operation and makes corrective adjustments short of operational check-out. Operates landing gear, up locks and down locks, to check for clearance. Completes installation of and fits such items as landing gear doors, flaps, etc. Fits or refits fillets; lays out and installs fillets as required. May install power plants and propellers when so assigned. Refers to assembly prints, sketches, specification sheets, planning and other authorized documents to ascertain size, type, and location of rivets and detail components to be assembled. Sets up rivet machine by selecting and installing proper combination drill-countersink or punch-dimple sets and upper and lower anvils in operating head and bottom post. Selects, installs and fills proper size rivet hoppers. Lays out rivet patterns to scale as required. Recognizes and notifies designated personnel of improper machine functioning. Installs heater blocks and sets specified temperature and dwell time when performing punch-hot dimple-riveting. Performs rework such as drilling out and replacing defective rivets. Performs satisfactorily any function of the Structures Assembler classification as required. Minimum Four years of experience as an Aircraft Structural Assembly Worker. This classification is multi-skilled and these employees may be assigned to do only one element of these skills such as structures installation/assembly only rather than electrical, hydraulic/plumbing, and/or controls installation/assembly. Therefore, to meet the above requirement an employee review must indicate satisfactory performance in structures assembly as well as hydraulic/plumbing, and/or controls. An employee may be required to work under pressurized conditions or in confined areas which require clearance of any applicable medical limitations on weight lifting, body movement or pressurization effects. Pressurizer certification will also be required.
