Working with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students to provide interpreting or transcribing services for classes, appointments, and other college-sponsored events. Performs platform interpreting for college-sponsored activities such as conferences, workshops, and seminars. Substitutes for other interpreters as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Interpret and translate classroom and related activities; college events; and employee/applicant activities

  • Facilitate communication between deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing students, faculty, staff and the public

  • Advocate when appropriate utilizing cultural mediation skills

  • Accurately convey the meaning and spirit of all parties involved

  • Match the language skills/needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing participants

  • Abide by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct, EvCC policies, and applicable state and federal laws

  • Observe and team with other interpreters

  • Respond to situations and concerns in a culturally competent manner

  • Prepare for assignments and request materials needed to provide quality service

  • Provide referrals to appropriate college and/or community resources

  • Perform Interpreter skill-building activities to continually improve/enhance current knowledge and skills related to interpreting.

  • Attend and participate in annual in-service training sessions and workshops.

  • Maintain confidentiality of student records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Ensure student and class information is secured on a daily basis.

  • Submit hours and leave reporting in a timely manner

  • Maintain records related to work completed as applicable.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree or equivalent education in Sign Language Interpreting or a related field. Degree requirements may be substituted with equivalent work experience.

  • Knowledge and competency in Deaf Culture.

  • Effective spoken and written communication skills.

  • Ability to interact effectively with others.

  • Ability to perform responsibilities under one's own initiative with general supervision.

  • Understanding of and compliance with the RID Code of Professional Conduct.

  • Fluency in American Sign Language, including strong receptive skills and voicing skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Sign Language Interpreting or a related field.

  • Experience in higher education.

  • Ability to interpret during evening and weekend hours as needed.

  • Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST) Level IV or V, Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification.

Work Hours:

Part time, maximum 69 hours per month. Hours will vary depending on student's quarterly class schedule and department needs.

This posting will be used to develop a pool of applications for anticipated hiring in future academic quarters. Applications are accepted on a ongoing basis. Qualified applicants will be contacted when openings occur.

If your hours total more than 350 hours in any 12-month period, your position will be represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees Union.

Position is limited to 1 year or 1,050 hours, whichever comes first. Per State of Washington rules, you may reach these limits only once at EvCC. If you have held another part time hourly position at EvCC since July 1, 2022, additional time and hours limits will apply, so you may not be eligible for hire in this position. After 1 year or 1,050 hours, a different type of appointment might be available.

Benefits

Paid sick leave accrues at 1 hour for every 40 hours worked.
