Position: ASL Instructional Assistant

Reports to: Building Administrator

Position Start Date: August 19, 2024

6.5 hours per day - .81 FTE

PURPOSE
Assist a classroom teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in general education
and special education classroom environments by providing clarification of verbal instruction and expectations
using american sign language; assist in the presentation and preparation of learning materials, lessons plans,
instructional exercises in classroom and resource room environments; assist in the implementation of individual
education plans (IEP) and Behavior Support Plan (BSP); perform clerical and supportive tasks for instructional
personnel.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Responsibilities:
1.Demonstrate a conversational fluency with American Sign Language (ASL)
2.Effectively assist hearing and deaf individuals in the communication process utilizing American Sign
Language (ASL) and combined communication strategies to provide access and clarification for students.
3.Provide academic assistance under the direction of the Specialist and/or the classroom teacher.
4.Assist the classroom teacher to provide instruction by reinforcing instruction using signing support and
total communication (gestures, supported lip reading etc) when requested by the student or teacher.
5.Work with students individually or in small groups to reinforce, or follow up on learning activities
6.Help students to be self-reliant by advocating for their needs.
7.Assist teachers with implementation of student's Individualized Education Program (I.E.P.) as directed.
8.Confer on a regular basis with a teacher in regard to activities, instructional goals and objectives, student
progress and pertinent health or behavior problems
9.Keep confidential all private conversations between and with the school staff and the student(s)
concerning family or personal issues (except as needed to be reported to the educational team or except
when required to share with the team)
10. Provides students a safe and secure environment at all times. This may include playground supervision,
crosswalk duty, cafeteria duty and small group management
11. Help students develop positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults; promote safety of the
students by helping them develop self-confidence and independence
12. Comprehend and follow written and oral instructions and complete work within established timelines
13. Be flexible and able to work harmoniously with others
14. Be able to communicate openly with all staff
15. Maintain a calm mindset; work well under pressure/not get aggravated
16. Administor minor first aid
17. Attend in-service and staff meetings as required
18. Other duties as assigned

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally more than 50 pounds with assistance
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision
Demonstrate strength and dexterity to operate cleaning tools
