Under general supervision, the position provides tailored retention and student success services for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students and leads the activities tailored to Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander programming through strategic initiatives focused on academic success, well-being, inclusion, celebration, completion and graduation of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students. The Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Student Success Initiatives primarily serves the needs of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander students under the Division of Equity, Diversity & Justice. The position assists the supervising manager by supporting services for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander students through case management towards graduation/transfer, organizing services, developing workshops, trainings, and events, and coordinating centralized assessment of student success initiatives geared towards closing equity gaps and addressing campus climate.

  • Supports student outreach, recruitment, career, retention, completion, and transfer efforts, in collaboration with other campus partners, with a special focus on Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander students.

  • Connects Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students to appropriate programs and services both on campus and off-campus to best assist them with issues affecting their retention, success, basic needs, safety, and wellbeing.

  • Monitors equity-focused Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander student involvement in on-campus support resources, including academic counseling, development of student educational plans, support services related to financial aid, scholarships, internships, transfer, including completion of transfer admission guarantees, and other campus services through a case management model.

  • Develops events and services for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Programs to support the educational experience of Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander students in collaboration with staff and faculty, including overseeing logistics and scheduling.

  • Monitors and support Early Alerts submitted by faculty and staff for Asian American, Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander-identified students through the establishment of goals centered in equity to promote success.

  • Implements campus wide programming focused on Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander students, including event calendar management and scheduling.

  • Collaborates with academic and career counselors, success coaches, instructional/non-instructional faculty, staff, instructional aids, tutors, and managers to identify potential barriers to Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander student persistence and develops culturally responsive strategies to address these barriers.

  • Utilizes data to develop and assess tailored Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander student retention, academic success, basic needs, and services and programs.

  • Collaborate with retention specialists and success coaches to coordinate and align Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander student success and retention efforts with District-wide retention efforts.

  • Prepares and provides educational workshops and trainings for students, staff, and faculty, on topics related to inclusion, student experience, strengths of Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander students, best practices for supporting Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander student success, and services available for students which may include work after hours and on weekends.

  • Leads, mentors, and evaluates performance for student interns/workers and volunteers from a strengths-based perspective, related to their program or projects, particularly those focused on Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander student programs and services.

  • Help identify and monitor progress on student-directed and student-driven goals that support self-sufficiency.

  • Develops reports to assist the supervising manager with assessing/evaluating the programs, services, and retention efforts of the Student Success Center, including program review, annual planning, and development of student learning outcomes.

  • Identifies goals and resources necessary to assist the supervising manager to meet the changing needs of Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander students.

  • Monitors the Center budget to assist the supervising manager in budget administration, including requisitions, documentation, and databases.

  • Collaborates with District staff to identify, hire and lead hourly staff.

  • Develops work schedules for student workers and hourly staff.

  • Conducts trainings for student workers and hourly staff to familiarize staff with programs and campus wide initiatives for Asian American/Pacific Islander students.

  • Assist in the development of culturally appropriate marketing and publicity materials such as flyers, emails, newsletters, posters, presentations, brochures, videos, websites, and social media platforms.

  • Updates the Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Programs and Initiatives website to provide students with relevant information.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in education, counseling, psychology, sociology, or closely related field

  • Two (2) years of experience working with the Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander communities or diversity affairs, and

  • Two (2) years of experience working in academic advising, retention, education, student services, non-profit, community organizing, mental health or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in education, counseling, psychology, sociology, or closely related field.

  • Four (4) years of experience working in the field of student services and success, education, non-profit, community organizing, mental health, or related field.

  • Experience selecting, training, and leading hourly staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander student experience in higher education, as well as knowledge of broader diversity in higher education and the ability to address these issues through retention programs and activities.

  • Knowledge of student retention strategies and services for Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander students.

  • Experience with crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and responding to emergent needs.

  • Commitment to social change including working to end all forms of oppression: racism, heterosexism, trans oppression, ableism, sexism, classism, etc.

  • Ability to effectively prioritize multiple work priorities and organize various projects and to follow safety and confidentiality protocols.

  • Demonstrated experience working with communities who have been traditionally underserved by higher education and experience in the pedagogy reflecting intersections of race, culture, class, ethnic, and queer communities.

  • Demonstrated skills in web marketing, design, and social media interactions.

  • Demonstrated experience in the following areas: recruitment, retention, or academic advising at the college level.

  • Excellent initiative, organization, attention to detail, resourcefulness and problem-solving.

  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills (e.g. the ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, sensitivity in interacting with students, staff, & faculty and handling sensitive issues).

  • Knowledge and experience using standard office computer applications such as Google Email and Calendars, Word, Excel, database software.

  • Ability to prepare various documents including operations manuals and procedures, program and activity schedules, proposals, reports, and monitor budgets.

  • Use general office software and equipment to develop training materials, develop work schedules, garner services for the Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Programs, generate reports, aggregate data, communicate with District staff and students.

  • Effectively promote and facilitate retention services, workshops, events, and services for Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander students.

  • Effectively assist the supervising manager in assessing the semester and annual goals for the Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander campus wide initiatives.

  • Maintain and develop effective relationships with District staff, students, and external agencies.
