Job Summary: Asbestos Workers play a crucial role in ensuring safe and effective asbestos abatement procedures. They are responsible for removing, handling, and disposing of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in compliance with regulations and industry standards. Asbestos Workers contribute to maintaining a healthy and hazard-free environment by minimizing asbestos exposure risks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Asbestos Removal: Safely remove asbestos-containing materials from buildings, structures, and equipment.

  • Inspection and Assessment: Inspect sites to identify ACMs, assess their condition, and determine the appropriate removal methods.

  • Containment Setup: Establish containment areas using plastic sheeting and negative air pressure systems to prevent asbestos fibers from spreading during removal.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear appropriate PPE, including respirators, coveralls, gloves, and eye protection.

  • Decontamination: Follow decontamination procedures after handling ACMs to prevent cross-contamination.

  • Material Disposal: Properly package and label asbestos waste for disposal at approved facilities.

  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of asbestos removal activities.

  • Collaboration: Coordinate with other team members, supervisors, and environmental consultants.

  • Adherence to Regulations: Comply with federal, state, and local regulations related to asbestos removal.

Requirements

Essential Qualifications:

  • Certification: Possess valid asbestos abatement certification as an Asbestos Worker or Contractor/Supervisor. This credential must be kept current throughout employment.

  • Training: Completed relevant training programs on asbestos handling, safety, and removal techniques.

  • Experience: Prior experience in asbestos abatement or related field is preferred.

  • Knowledge: Familiarity with asbestos regulations, health risks, and safe work practices.

  • Physical Fitness: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy materials and working in confined spaces.

  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous in following protocols to prevent asbestos exposure.

  • Communication Skills: Effective communication within the team and with supervisors.

Working Conditions:

  • Environment: Work primarily indoors, often in older buildings with ACMs.

  • Hours: May involve irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.

  • Hazards: Exposure to asbestos fibers (mitigated through proper PPE and procedures).

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift and carry heavy bags of asbestos waste (up to 50 pounds).

  • Stand, bend, and kneel for extended periods.

  • Wear protective gear for extended durations.

  • Operate tools and equipment used in asbestos removal.
