Overview:
Artward Bound is a free, four-year college pathway program in the visual arts for Boston high school students at Massachusetts College of Art & Design (MassArt). Artward Bound prepares 9th-12th grade students interested in art and design with the artistic and academic skills needed for admission to and success at an art/design college or other post-secondary institution.
Position Description:
Artward Bound is seeking 2-3 Academic Instructors to join the Artward Bound Summer 2024 teaching team. Each Academic Instructor will develop and teach two 3-week courses to 9th, 10th, and/or 11th grade students in their subject area (math, science, ELA, or art history) during Artward Bound's summer session. They will ensure the participation of mainstream students, as well as students with disabilities and English language learners in an inclusive setting. Academic Instructors will work with Artward Bound staff to develop strategies to support student learning and determine the need to reach out to families and other support sources. Academic Instructors will help students focus on study and organizational skills, time management, and habits of mind.
Academic courses will take place July 22-August 8, Monday-Thursday, 10-10:50am (course 1) and 11-11:50am (course 2). Classes will be taught in-person on MassArt's campus. Academic Instructors are expected to be on campus at least 45 minutes prior to the start of their first class and attend weekly meetings with Artward Bound staff.
Each Academic Instructor will be paired with at least one Artward Bound Mentor (a MassArt undergraduate student employee) who will serve as a teaching assistant for the class. Instructors are expected to work with their Mentor prior to each day's instruction to plan for the day and meet student needs. Academic Instructors should support their Mentor's development as a youth worker, educator, and professional.

Qualifications:
Strong candidates will have:
An undergraduate degree in their subject area
Professional training and direct experience teaching high school students in a classroom setting
Must have patience and a strong desire to help students achieve their goals
Friendly, patient and sensitive to the diverse needs of students
Knowledge of Positive/Creative Youth Development approaches to supporting youth; Experience supporting the academic and social emotional needs of underrepresented youth
Preferred Qualifications:
Massachusetts Teaching Licensure
Experience working with Boston Public School students
Experience creating and teaching arts-based lessons or implementing creative projects into their curriculum
Additional language proficiency other than English (especially Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, and/or Mandarin Chinese)
