Artificial Intelligence + Machine Learning Instructor
EXPLO Pre-College + Career
An academic summer enrichment program for students in grades 10-12 on the campus of a prestigious New England area college. Running this summer from June 26th to August 5th.
Seeking instructors for Summer 2022 to lead a two week, college-credit, hands-on course in Artificial Intelligence + Machine Learning.
2, 4, and 6 week teaching appointments are available. Room and board is available for candidates who are not local.
This is an exceptional opportunity to join a world class program that is designed to live at the intersection of academics and the future of work. You will be provided with a highly engaging, experientially based Artificial Intelligence + Machine Learning curriculum that has been designed with a group of top experts in the field, yet is still open enough for you to make your mark. Students in this Concentration have the option to complete the summer coursework and an additional post-summer assignment in order to earn two college credits through one of our partnering colleges.
If you are someone with significant experience in Artificial Intelligence + Machine Learning, are an advanced graduate student, have already earned a terminal degree, or currently teach high school or college, we are interested in connecting. EXPLO is renowned for the support it provides its instructors and teaching fellows, so if you don't have a lot of teaching, but you know AI + Machine Learning and you are open to professional coaching and keen on improving your craft, this could be a position for you.
You'll work with an Instructional Coach, our resident experts in non-traditional teaching techniques, as well as one or more EXPLO teaching fellows who you will advise in leading a section of the Concentration. The curriculum features visiting faculty, guest speakers, and projects with organizations whose work is on the frontiers of their field. This is an excellent opportunity to extend your professional network while working with bright and curious students.
Artificial Intelligence + Machine Learning
The Artificial Intelligence + Machine Learning Concentration is an exploration of human nature, intelligence, and technology. It uses artificial intelligence as a lens for exploring the most important issues humanity faces today and in the coming decades, many of which exist at the intersection of those areas.
The program's topics invite critical thinking, reflection, and dialogue. Students will be asked to deepen their thinking and move past the all too common utopian/dystopian scenarios that are so present in popular discourse about artificial intelligence. Rather, we start from the premise that how this civilization-altering technology unfolds is well within our hands and is being shaped by the ethical and technological decisions we make today.
To begin to see ourselves more clearly in relation to artificial intelligence, students must have an understanding of what we know, and don't yet know, about the nature of human intelligence. To do this, we'll explore the psychological, neurological, and philosophical underpinnings of human intelligence.
With this knowledge at hand, we'll turn our attention to the technical and conceptual workings of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Very often these are reflections of fundamental processes in human intelligence, thus we'll use analogies such as neural networking and reinforcement learning as our bridges between human intelligence and artificial intelligence.

A strong work ethic
In 1976, an idea took hold in the halls of MIT: a powerful reimagining of the summer experience for high school students. That idea became EXPLO, a pioneering and world-class summer enrichment program where students pursue their interests unconstrained by grades and tests.
The result? A collaborative, transdisciplinary learning environment, where students drive their own learning through exploration.
Today, EXPLO is a mission-driven, educational non-profit with more than 85,000 student alumni who hail from 90 countries. We offer residential summer programs for students in grades 4 through 12 on three of the most beautiful college campuses on the East Coast of the U.S.
For many, EXPLO is a life-changing experience. Our students sometimes describe it as the place where they feel like the truest version of themselves.
As an organization, we believe learning should be joyful and create experiences with engagement, inclusion, and magic as first principles. Each summer we share these experiences with smart and curious students from all over the world.
EXPLO is also committed to access and equity. This is why, as a not-for-profit, we strive to make our summer programs as accessible for as many curious and motivated young people as we can. EXPLO's financial aid program provides grant and scholarship support to families who demonstrate need through the EXPLO Scholarship Fund.
Working at EXPLO
This position on our teaching faculty most closely resembles a typical Day School teaching role. With that said, each Concentration is an immersive two week experience for students, who are in residence on campus, engaging in evening and weekend programming, and are cared for and supervised by our residential staff who live on campus all summer. A typical day starts with a Concentration session beginning at 9:00 a.m. and concludes with a planning and reflection session until 5:00 p.m.
Former faculty tell us that the feedback and support they received at EXPLO exceeded that from a year-long teaching position. In fact, many academics, educators, graduate students, and practitioners seek out teaching opportunities with EXPLO because of our reputation for providing top-notch training in engaging, non-traditional teaching techniques.
"At EXPLO, I learned the power of curiosity and the magic of discovery. Due to EXPLO, my teaching philosophy centers around individualized learning and the process rather than a particular outcome." - former EXPLO Faculty member Caitlin Fuller, founding teacher at a California Charter High School.
This is a seasonal position and compensation is competitive. For the health and safety of our community, EXPLO requires all employees and new hires to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
