MITRE's Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy Systems Department has a need for a Lead Artificial Intelligence Engineer. Our work programs need top individuals with a passion for artificial intelligence, experience and proficiency with algorithmic design and development; specifically, in machine learning (including deep learning), and one or more of the following technical areas: cognitive science, multi-agent systems, knowledge-based reasoning, automated planning, semantics, and ontologies.

You will have opportunities to work on a wide range of problems, leading and working with teams possessing a broad range of skills. Your experience will allow you to influence research directions; evaluate the challenges and potential solutions for designing, developing, and fielding artificial intelligence solutions; assess the adequacy and maturation of existing research programs and shape their technical and programmatic direction; and identify new areas where research and development are needed to strengthen the nation's growing artificial intelligence capabilities.

Day to day responsibilities:

  • Work on, or lead, a team to develop and implement AI algorithms

  • Develop and use modern software engineering techniques to develop AI-related software

  • Maintain knowledge of advances of AI capabilities in industry and academia

  • Develop, propose and execute research in the field of AI

  • Develop and propose new research directions in AI-enabled systems in support of MITRE's internal research program and sponsor's research programs

  • Evaluate AI solutions and compare to sponsor requirements and needs

Basic:

  • Bachelors Degree in Machine / Deep Learning, artificial intelligence or related discipline

  • 5 + years of experience in defining, developing, and deploying AI solutions.

  • Must be a US citizen able to obtain and maintain a US government clearance

Requirements:

  • 5+ years successful experience in AI-relevant fields, such as machine learning, deep learning, multi-agent systems, planning, and data science.

  • Documented ability to articulate AI-specific challenges, discuss critical issues, and identify gaps.

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) along with ability to foster relationship development with sponsors

  • Proven ability to work independently to learn new technologies, techniques, processes, languages, platforms, systems

  • Ability to work both independently and with a team.

  • Experience with programming languages such as C++ and Python.

  • Familiarity with the state of the art in the field.

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree in artificial intelligence, Machine / Deep Learning or related

  • Active DoD Secret clearance.

We are looking for motivated individuals who are interested in the application of advanced Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning/Computer Vision (AI/ML/CV) algorithms to GEOINT data sources, to include: electro-optical (EO) imagery, infrared imagery (OPIR), hyperspectral imagery (HSI), radar (SAR), full motion video (FMV), Wide Are Motion Imagery (WAMI), and 3D data from a range of sources. Join a team that is developing state of the art algorithms to automatically extract information and "meaning" from these and other geospatial data sources to deliver mission-critical impact across our sponsors. Apply a broad understanding of MITRE's national security portfolio and the opportunities and challenges in government adoption of AI/ML/CV to aggressively identify potential solutions to national security gaps. Responsibilities include: * White-board (i.e., brainstorming and problem solving) with experienced technical staff to develop solutions for challenging problems in the fields listed above, working with a small team to implement/test those solutions, and quantifying their accuracy * Leverage the collective wisdom of the government, academia, industry, and other FFRDCs to create transformational impact, and help advance the field by sharing our research via publications and professional conferences * Advance the state-of-the-art in AI though cross-cutting initiatives that demonstrate a substantial and sustained record of technical achievement, depth, breadth, rigor, and innovation * Act as a partner and direct channel between MITRE's research program and MITRE mission challenges in AI to accelerate delivery of game-changing solutions to a potentially disparate set of sponsors * Maintain a deep understanding of AI and the multiple sponsor domains to identify opportunities and risks for new and existing initiatives * Build partnerships, encourage sharing, collaboration, and dissemination of knowledge, and bring the world to bear to provide the best solutions * Serve as a technology transition champion, enabling the transition of technical solutions and recommendations to solve critical problems Basic Qualifications: * Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field * 10+ years of relevant experience * 2+ years of leadership experience Required Qualifications: * Must be a U.S. citizen with active DoD Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility * Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, and Word * Must have demonstrated proficiency and strength in verbal, written, PC, presentation, and communications skills * Experience in operational AI algorithms, solutions, and products * Technical leadership in AI, data analytics, and commercial AI tools, solutions, and frameworks Preferred Qualifications: * Advanced degree in technical field of study * Candidates that possess a current/active DoD Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility are preferred * Experience working with multiple Government departments or agencies is preferred, but experience working on transformational projects in other complex environments may be considered MITRE's workplace reflects our values.
