QUALIFICATIONS:

1.Appropriate Colorado Department of Education certification

2.Bachelors' degree with major or minor in art

REPORTS TO: Principal

JOB GOAL: To develop in each student an interest in and the ability to express himself creatively in visual terms, utilizing skills and techniques of artistic expression appropriate to the student's interests and abilities; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Teach knowledge and skills in art, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history and/or three-dimensional art to secondary students, using courses of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.

2.Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.

3.Provide instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.

4.Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing, painting and modeling, using standard and/or teacher-prepared instructional aids.

5.Develop instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration and working time.

6.Provide individual and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.

7.Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive environment.

8.Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.

9.Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.



  1. Evaluate each student's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings and prepare progress reports.

  2. Select and requisition books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids and maintains required inventory records.

  3. Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students' work for the school and community. May sponsor exhibits from outside sources.

  4. Maintain professional competence through in service education activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.

  5. Maintain an auditable record of student attendance and make daily reports of students absent each period. Assign citizenship and scholarship marks.

  6. Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.

  7. Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress.

  8. Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems.

  9. Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level.

  10. Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.

  11. Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.


Sterling is located in Logan County in the Northeastern corner of Colorado on Interstate 76 alongside the Platte River. Having the largest population, approximately 13,900, in Logan County and much of the surrounding area, Sterling offers shopping, restaurants, numerous parks, a recreation center, access to medical care and is located near North Sterling Reservoir. Sterling is approximately 1 1/2 hours from Denver International Airport and 2 hours from Denver and the front range (I-25 corridor).

RE-1 Valley School District has two high schools, one middle school, one junior high school, three elementary schools and two preschools and serves approximately 2,200 students in the Sterling and Iliff/Crook areas, employing about 500 staff.

Essential Functions: Performance Responsibilities: * Inspire wonder and joy for learning and build appropriate relationships for life-long learning. * Provide research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's IEP. * In cooperation with classroom teachers, assess student progress and determine the needs for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques. * Provide a positive learning environment and employ various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals. * Develop and implement annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education services required to meet those goals. * Work cooperatively with support team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies. * Coordinate the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP. * Create a positive learning experience with emphasis in individualized instruction using appropriate sources. * In cooperation with the support team, conduct special education evaluations and reevaluations. * Provide direction, supervision and evaluation of paraprofessionals as directed. * Comply with School Board policies and all state and federal rules and regulations. * Complete all district and state reporting requirements. Qualifications and Education Requirements: * Shall possess the necessary license required by the Colorado Department of Education or be endorsed in the appropriate areas accepted by the Colorado Department of Education. * Continued professional development in Special Education and related areas of study. * Participate in all professional growth opportunities offered by the district. Supervisory Responsibility: This position supervises classroom Paraeducators. Essential Functions: Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: Position is responsible for support staff and classroom management including students with a wide range of academic needs and abilities to quickly adapt for maintaining positive classroom environment. Work environment may fluctuate between high-paced and quiet moments requiring the teacher to maintain calm, caring demeanor. Physical requirements could include lifting up to 50 lbs., frequently walking through classroom and frequent interruptions.
