NATURE OF WORK

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students' interest, abilities, talents and skills for artistic expression and creativity in the visual arts, as well as aesthetic understanding and appreciation by implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; developing lesson plans; modeling the necessary skills to performing assigned tasks; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Required to hold state certification in Art (license code 810) and designated as "highly qualified."

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and administers school art curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.

  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for art instruction.

  • Teaches knowledge and skills in art, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, and three-dimensional art to secondary pupils, following the course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities.

  • Provides instruction by which pupils develop aesthetic concepts and appreciation and the ability to make qualitative judgment s about art, appreciation and what constitutes art.

  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student skills and learning in artistic techniques and expression, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.

  • Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling, using standard and teacher-prepared instructional aids.

  • Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.

  • Instructs students in proper care and use of tools and equipment used in art classes.

  • Evaluates each student's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepares progress reports.

  • Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students' work for the school and the community.

  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meeting, or by conducting research.

  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.

  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.

  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and established and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.

  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators.

MINIMUM STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM RESPONSIBILITIES

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, calculators, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, strategic plans, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, evaluations, budgets, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions;

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; and to apply the principles of algebra, descriptive statistics and statistical inference.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Does not require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Masterful knowledge of curriculum and best practices.

  • Highly developed presentation skills.

  • Knowledge of effective staff development models that lead to successful development of effective teachers.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Considerable human relations and human development skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability.

  • Good technical skills with technology and presentaiton tools.

  • Ability to use common office machines and popular computer-drive word processing, spreadsheet and file maintenance programs.

  • Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and statistics and to develop meainingful reports from that information.

  • Ability to paln and evaulate strategies for new teacher development.

  • Ability to exerciese consideralbe tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the public.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

  • Ability to work with adult learners.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Full-time for ten (10) months

Salary based on state and local salary schedules
