Overview

Under the direction and guidance of the Sr. Director of CES this position is responsible for providing Art education, including instruction and enrichment, to the students of Dooley School at St.

Joseph's Villa, Sarah Dooley Center for Autism, and Dooley Center for Alternative Education. The Art Teacher will be responsible for developing in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with school guidelines; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art.

All work is performed safely, effectively, to the highest ethical standards, and in accordance with regulatory and accrediting standards and St.

Joseph's Villa's mission, values, and guiding principles.

Responsibilities

Maintains sight and sound supervision of students.

Works with classroom teachers to understand the needs of the students.

Designs appropriate and complete lesson plans, including objectives, modalities, and tools to assess learning, to support individual student development and to comply with mandated requirements such as Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and Individual Instruction Plans.

Ensures appropriate and sufficient learning materials and resources are available for all students.

Teach knowledge and skills in art, including drawing, painting, lettering, and art history,

Provide instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art

Implements research-based classroom instruction, incorporating computer technology as appropriate. Evaluates students' mastery of the material and modifies delivery modalities as needed.

Assigns teaching and monitoring responsibilities to Assistant Teacher as necessary. Oversees quality of instruction and support provided to the student by the Assistant Teacher. Directs activities of Counselor(s) assigned to students under the Teacher tutelage.

Arranges field trips appropriate to the instructional content and ages and abilities of the students.

Uses approved behavior management techniques to work with students in crisis.

Prepares regular reports on student's progress including report cards, interim report cards, and IEP progress reports. Tracks student attendance and reports absences to Operations Coordinator.

Confers with classroom teachers to report student's progress.

Contacts guardian or parent(s) when serious incident (SIR) occurs.

Advises Principal/Head of Academy of any performance issues in the classroom, whether student or staff-based. Reports any unsafe condition or maintenance matters to Head of Academy and/or Proncipal

Assists in planning, coordinating, and implementing therapeutic recreational activities in conjunction with other staff.

Develops curriculum and selects materials for the classroom in collaboration with the Head of Academy or Principal.

Models appropriate professional behavior and dress.

Promotes good community relations and utilizes needed community services.

Participates in staff meetings and other staff and program group activities, including after school and evening programs, essential for the operation of an effective psycho-educational program. Assumes active role in designing and implementing in-service training programs on innovations in the field.

May voluntarily support student athletics, arts, and/or other extracurricular activities.

Evaluates work processes and methods and submits recommendations for continuous quality improvement.

Attends scheduled training programs for professional development that includes, at a minimum, trainings required by St.

Joseph's Villa and by regulatory and accrediting bodies.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

BS/BA degree in Art education with a current and valid Virginia teaching license. One year classroom experience with students with special education (or alternative education) needs.

Proficient with Windows, Outlook, internet research, assistive technology, and MS Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience with proprietary software preferred. Valid VA driver's license with excellent driving record.
