Purpose:

PURPOSE:

The Department of Art and Art History at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, seeks applicants for Quarterly Adjunct Lecturer (non-tenure track) positions to teach undergraduate courses in Art History. Specific assignments will be made according to the academic qualifications of the individual and programmatic need.

Santa Clara University is on the quarter system, and the quarters are 10 weeks long with an 11th week for final examinations. This is an applicant pool; as such, positions are hired as needed. The successful candidate will teach no more than 2 courses in any quarter and no more than four courses over the fall, winter and spring quarters. All classes will be presented in- person, however, if the county health and university health conditions deteriorate, the successful candidate may be asked to teach part of the course online.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach one sequence for our innovative Cultures and Ideas I & II series. The Culture and Ideas course sequence must approach the history of visual culture from a global perspective (including both Western and non-Western components) and span a chronological sequence of at least 200 years.

Art historians of various specialties may propose Cultures and Ideas I-II course sequences as long as they include Western and non-Western components. You may choose to use a pre-approved syllabus for the Cultures and Ideas sequence or develop your own sequence in conjunction with departmental expectations (Please note: new courses are submitted to a rigorous approval process through a college faculty committee.) Examples of pre-approved Art History courses that satisfy core Cultures and Ideas I-II requirements include: Art of the Silk Road; Art, Power, and Propaganda; Art of Contact:

New Worlds; Mediterranean Encounters; Trading Places: Art, Trade, and Cultural Exchange; and Exhibiting the Global.

The Fall schedule for this position requires teaching one section of ARTH 83 Dance of the Gods: Art in South Asia on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:10-1:50pm.

The Winter schedule requires teaching one section of ARTH 11A Cultures and Ideas I on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am-10:10am and one lower-division Art History elective on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:20am-12:00pm. The Spring schedule requires teaching one section of ARTH 12A Cultures & Ideas II on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am-10:10am.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

1). Terminal degree (Ph.D./MFA) in Art History or a closely-related field. Applicants who are ABD or possess a Master's degree, accompanied by commensurate academic experience in Art History or a closely-related field (5-7 years of college or professional teaching) will be considered.

2). Demonstrated excellence in teaching art history at the college level.

3). Excellent communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1). Demonstration of inclusive pedagogical practices that advance SCU goals of diversity and equity.

2). Demonstrated experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

TEACHING (100%)

Teaching duties include but are not limited to:

Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with assigned courses, including:

a. Teaching a course load of no more than two courses per quarter, and no more than four per academic year;

b. Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively;

c. Assigning and evaluating assignments that align with the course description and course learning outcomes, and providing timely feedback to students;

d. Holding regular weekly office hours on campus;

e. Submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated

f. Administering numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses;

g. Where applicable, teaching from an approved syllabus for the University Core courses assigned or working with the Chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.

SERVICE (0%)
