We are currently seeking a Area Safety Director to oversee various locations in the Central Area.

The Area Safety Director role provides safety leadership over a designated area and ensures the workplace meets all company, legal and regulatory expectations and actively supports occupational health and safety. This role is responsible for operationalizing and implementing all company safety initiatives through the Region Safety Managers as well as informing Area leadership of trends/trouble spots.

Responsibilities:

Governance & Compliance

  • Advises field leaders on safety compliance concerns and preventative actions.

  • Implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT).

  • Ensures that we operate in full accordance with the FMCSR and stays current with changes; provides updates to field leadership.

  • Conducts audits and investigations to ensures field locations maintain safety files and records in compliance with Company policies and government regulations; prepares written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventive measures where indicated and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.

  • Oversees compliance in the standards of driver hiring and monitors the standards through audits and evaluations.

  • Identifies, establishes, and/or maintains the safety training requirements for regional safety programs and the associated methods of communication for our DOT classified workforce.

Safety Culture Leadership

  • Champions a Safety culture to ensure alignment with company core values and business vision.

  • Ensures safety goals in the operational region are actively pursued, monitored and reported out on a monthly basis.

  • Researches, recommends, develops and implements safety awareness and incentive programs.

  • Develops Area Safety Managers and Safety and Training Supervisors' professional skills, in the areas of investigation, training, presentations, data analysis and employee selection and evaluation.

  • Assists in selection and training of new safety and training supervisors.

  • Communicates with safety and training supervisors on regular basis.

  • Assists General Managers in evaluating Safety and Training Supervisors' performance.

  • Serves as a resource to review and offer input and approval on driver applicants relative to their past employment and driving records.

  • Assists in development of high-potential safety training supervisors within region to ensure future safety leadership pipeline.

Accident & Injury Prevention & Management

  • Partners with field leadership to develop vehicle accident and work-related injury prevention plans based on loss data and cause analysis and ensure plans are well executed.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert on accident investigations and incidents and provides guidance to safety training supervisors.

  • Oversees post-accident investigation and prepares summaries on root causes and hazards for field staff and senior management.

  • Summarizes all accidents in the region by completing root-cause analysis and subsequent depiction.

Training

  • Plans, develops and implements safety communication and training on work site safety practices.

  • Attends and presents at monthly safety meetings, start-up meetings and safety committee meetings

  • Provides safety training to CSC management teams in accordance with Company-developed curriculum

  • Assists in training new safety committees.

Data Analysis

  • Investigates, determines, and develops processes to track effectiveness of safety programs

  • Reviews monthly loss control key indicators report comparing vehicle accident and work-related injury performance with plan determining why variances occur and participates in corrective action programs.

  • Knowledge of safety practices that lead to safe, healthy and accident-free work environment

  • Understanding of how to build and maintain strong customer relationships.

  • Understanding of leadership development practices.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, or governmental regulations

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, staff and customers

  • Ability to implement large-scale, complex initiatives

  • Demonstrated analytical skills to help all levels of leadership identify, analyze and facilitate performance improvement to positively impact operational results

  • Ability to solve tough problems with creative data driven solutions

  • Proven customer service skills including customer driven solutions

  • Proven ability to persevere in challenging environments and where the solutions are not easily identified or implemented

  • Relationship building in an effort to provide high-level support and advice to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Oral and written communication skills to promote strong working relationships within the organization.

  • Ability to interact with and influence senior executives

  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other MS-Based applications including Excel, PowerPoint, Project & Visio.

  • 4 year Degree in Safety Management, Health Sciences or Occupational Health or equivalent experience

  • 5 years' experience with DOT regulations and safety administration in general industry; transportation experience preferred

  • Experience supporting multiple sites/branches/locations; ability to provide guidance and management from a remote location
