Dakota Supply Group (DSG) is seeking an Area Manager for the Twin Cities metro region of Minnesota. As an Area Manager, you will be responsible for leading a new geographic or targeted area that includes multi-site wholesale distribution branches specializing in the Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, Waterworks, and other diverse segments. This position will provide direct leadership to sales, branch, and operations managers in the distribution business for all locations in the designated area. This role requires the analysis of broad and complex issues and the formulation of executable strategies to ensure that we are delivering to our customers in the most efficient and effective manner. This position will work closely with Regional General Manager to provide strategy and vision that will ensure continued growth. A Typical Day in the Life of an Area Manager:

  • Partners closely with Regional General Manager to ensure successful growth in segments, footprint, and people in designated area.

  • Effectively manages profit and loss center of designated area to ensure attainment or exceeding of financial goals as established by regional business and companywide budgets and strategic plan.

  • Implements corporate directed programs, including marketing, sales, purchasing, distribution, operations, accounting/finance, safety, education, and employee resources.

  • Works consistently to continue to attract, recruit, develop, and engage talent to ensure sustainable growth of designated area.

  • Continuous communication, collaboration, and partnership with Regional General Manager, sales and operations leadership, and area branch leadership to ensure effective and efficient area management.

  • Leverages best practices within the area and across the organization

  • Assumes primary responsibility for efficient, cost-effective operations across all facilities area

  • Reviews financial and operating reports; monitors all departments and locations on a regular basis

  • Assists Corporate Credit staff with collection of customer accounts

  • Approves wage, bonus, and commission schedules in line with corporate guidelines and budget constraints

  • Approves, within budgetary and corporate guidelines and alignment with Regional General Manager, expenditures for capital equipment

  • Manages the overall activities of the region, overseeing work accomplished by sales leadership and branch managers and ensures work is consistent with corporate policies and objectives

  • Ensures inventory management is consistent with sales, cash flow and financial goals

  • Conducts regular staff meetings

  • Interacts effectively with customers and vendors, maintaining and developing relationships

  • Keeps abreast of industry trends; attends trade shows, conventions, and seminars as appropriate or as directed

  • Implements improved processes and management methods to generate higher ROI and workflow optimization, within individual warehouses and across multiple warehouses.

  • Interacts regularly with Regional General Manager and individual department heads to ensure that the area's priorities are aligned with overall company direction.

  • Responsible for budgeting, analysis, and reporting to Regional General manager for the executive leadership team to evaluate operating results in terms of cost, budget, operating policies, trends, increased profit (or decreased expense) opportunities.

  • Fosters a corporate culture that promotes ethical practices, people-centric, customer focus, and service while driving individual accountability and integrity.

  • Creates and manages a department structure, operating standards, and practices that are responsive and adaptable to evolving needs from both our internal and external customers.

  • Manages employee performance and development by establishing clear goals and expectations, tracking progress against goals, ensuring timely feedback, and addressing performance challenges in a prompt and professional manner.

  • Leads the continuous improvement of the customer experience through programs and initiatives to reduce errors, provide on-time delivery, and exceed customer quality expectations.

  • All other duties as assigned.

A Successful Area Manager Typically Has:

  • Bachelor's Degree in business, Finance, Distribution Management, or related equivalent field experience

  • 7-10 Years' experience providing distribution leadership; managing complex business situations; operations; product knowledge; finance

  • Must have strong business knowledge and experience, with the ability to provide reports and analysis of financial and operational position to forecast; ability to develop and implement business and growth plans

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of management, financial analysis, project management, and personnel management.

  • Skilled in planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating a wide variety of activities; developing, implementing, and communicating policies and procedures for a large organization; analyzing data, making sound recommendations, and adopting effective causes of action, working tactfully with all levels of the organization.

  • Previous accountability for departmental/company P&L with demonstrated experience in profitability management.

  • Adaptable and able to multi-task; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving work environment while also driving toward clarity and solutions.

  • Experience leading a multi-facility business is preferred

  • Progressive management experience with demonstrated success

  • Ability to travel 50+% of time and travel to multiple sites within area.
