The Area Coordinator (AC) is an integral staff member of the University Housing team. The AC supports the University Housing, Student Services, and University of South Dakota missions by facilitating and managing the following areas of University Housing within their assigned working location:
Summary
The Area Coordinator is a 12-month, full-time, live-in member of the University Housing team and is responsible for two complexes of four residence halls, their occupants (approximately 1,200) and facilities. Primary responsibilities include overall residence hall administration including (but not limited to): training and supervision of Resident Assistant (RA) staff, programming oversight, policy enforcement, student conduct, responding to students in crisis, student development, office hours, on-call responsibilities, and core working hours.
Additional responsibilities include chairing a committee assignment, co-supervision of hall desk worker staff, and supervision of up to three graduate assistants. The AC is also expected to establish and maintain a residence hall atmosphere conducive to learning and personal growth consistent with the goals of University Housing, Student Services, and the University of South Dakota.
Required Qualifications
Master's degree in higher education, student personnel, counseling or closely related field, OR Earned Bachelor's degree by date of application plus at least two years of full-time residential life or student affairs experience or equivalent experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered
Strong written and oral communication, administrative and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
Proven leadership and experience in working with a diverse student population
Ability to establish strong collaborative relationships and work effectively with students, faculty, and staff
Experience in problem resolution and crisis response
Experience with programming and budgeting
Supervision experience
Ability to perform basic to intermediate functions of the Microsoft Office Suite and other administrative software
Staff Supervision
Provides primary leadership, support, and supervision for multiple residence hall complexes.
Directly supervise a large staff of Resident Assistants (up to 32) and up to three Graduate Assistants. Work with in-hall administrative assistants where applicable.
Select, train, and evaluate Resident Assistant and Desk Worker staff in conjunction with departmental expectations and initiatives.
Communicates daily with GA staff directly supervised to maintain smooth building operation
Meet with hall staff on a regular basis; facilitate weekly staff meetings with Resident Assistant staff, hold regular Resident Assistant and Desk Worker one-on-one meetings and implement Yotes GROW (Guided Reflection on Work) Employee Development Plan and supervise this facilitation by Graduate Assistants
Facilitate growth and development of individual staff members and promote team dynamics.
Assist in the planning and implementation of regular professional development opportunities for all student staff.
Student Development & Outreach
Mentor and support Resident Assistants in completion of University Housing community building and programmatic guidelines.
Work with the Resident Assistant staff, tracking and reporting of in-hall programming initiatives.
Understand and utilize student development theory while assisting student leaders in the areas of personal, academic and leadership growth.
Develop programming targeted at first year students to aid in their success.
Manage the Complex budgets pertaining to all complex specific programming activities.
With the Assistant Director of Housing, coordinate Living Learning Communities (LLC) operations including maintaining current offerings and potentially expanding offerings.
Housing and Hall Operations
Collaborate with custodial and maintenance staff as needed for the operation of the Complex. Submit and track work orders for the area of responsibility.
Facilitate hall openings and closings as necessitated for the start and end of each semester and break periods where applicable.
Collaborate with central office staff in all occupancy related concerns including check-in, check-out, assessments, and room changes.
Facilitate room/hall change process, late arrivals, and withdraws within area of responsibility or as directed.
Assist the Housing Occupancy Coordinator in managing overflow occupancy in overflow spaces of assigned Complexes. This includes releasing students from overflow spaces into permanent assignments.
Fulfill the responsibilities of professional committee assignments as directed including chairing a committee.
Maintain regular office hours to be available to residents and staff for appointments and walk-in meetings.
Liaison with Facilities Management during renovations of the North Complex to minimize impacts to residents during construction.
Safety, Security, and Policy Enforcement
Communicate with University Housing, University Police, and other applicable parties regularly regarding safety and security concerns pertaining to residents and facilities.
Participate in a Professional Staff on-call rotation, being responsible for a department provided cell phone and 24-hour emergency response. This occurs approximately three weeks each semester.
Enforce the policies of University Housing, The University of South Dakota, and the South Dakota Board of Regents within all residential facilities.
Maintain proper risk management practices including (but not limited to): regular complex walk-throughs, coordination of room and safety inspections as needed or directed, and facilitation of regular emergency drills as directed.
Act as a Hearing Officer in cooperation with the office of Student Rights and Responsibilities and report to the Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities for assigned cases.
Participate in regular training and development about student conduct.
Summer Responsibilities
Summer responsibilities are assigned to Area Coordinators based upon qualifications, experience, and satisfactory job performance and are determined on an annual basis.
Working with the Director of University Housing, facilitate the University Housing Summer Camps and Conferences Program and summer student housing. Supervise 12-18 summer student staff.
Organize the logistics of check-in and check-out procedures for camps and conferences and summer students. Work with Facilities Management to organize room cleaning and turnover.
Contribute and chair summer committee responsibilities as directed.
Prepare for Academic Year initiatives
Division of Student Services
Represent University Housing and Student Services at university-wide committee meetings, attend divisional staff meetings, and provide expertise through attendance at meetings and events.
Provide excellent communication to the Vice President for Student Services/Dean of Students Office.
