II. Position Summary

Oversee operations, financial performance, training, and development and guest satisfaction of multiple units. Hire the right people and ensure the restaurant teams consistently demonstrate and execute behaviors that produce the culture and results consistent with company and franchisor standards policies, programs and systems. Effectively motivate, communicate, model, and remove barriers to enable maximum performance of subordinates and develop solutions that drive business results.

III. Accountability Scope

Fiscal and operational management is a key accountability. This position is directly responsible for hundreds of thousands of dollars in capital and resources.

Other Area Coach accountabilities include but are not limited to: field-visibility in restaurants; complete and timely compliance of company and franchisor standards for food safety, security, safety, and employment matters including staffing and labor laws. Enhances image of the Company by ensuring product integrity.

IV. Principal Responsibilities

LEADING PEOPLE / DEVELOPMENT

  • Coaches and supports the restaurants by providing timely and consistent development; ensures GM's provide appropriate development for AM's and other team staff ; encourages management teams to improve performance, provides the training for them to do their jobs well, and does not let people work without proper training. Utilizes restaurant visit routines as a forum for discussion and coaching.

    Demonstrates teamwork by holding regular Area meetings, effectively resolving concerns, and ensuring resources are shared. Builds people capability through execution of the Bench Planning and internal promotion processes. Ensures execution of Team Member selection process in their restaurants to hire only the right people.

    Hires, develops, and promotes GM's and AM's. Ensures all management and Team Members receive effective and timely Performance Evaluations and Development Plans as appropriate. Demonstrates "BELIEF IN PEOPLE" by treating each person on their team fairly and with respect. "RECOGNIZES" individuals and frequently encourages team members to recognize each other.

    Displays positive energy in restaurants. Smiles and greets all Team Members.

Ensures all GM's and AM's are Serve-Safe certified; ensures implementation of the Learning Zone program at all levels; develops and implements succession bench planning for all AM's and up; participates in management recruiting to coach and assist in building successful restaurant management bench.

EMPLOYEE RELATIONS -Effectively communicates brand culture and strategy to restaurant teams, Senior Area Coach, and COO. Discusses company goals and performance in Sales meetings and Rallies and ensures engagement of the entire team.

Functions as a team builder and coach; recognizes and eliminates communication barriers; teaches and models good employee relations, communicates important issues to GM's on a consistent basis; maintains documentation on important employee relations issues. Escalates applicable matters to HR and COO such as: performance issues, employment decisions, leaves, background checks, sexual harassment and other matters that substantiate their guidance and expertise to limit legal exposure.

FINANCIALS - Ensures controllable expenses are managed to plan; ensures reports and tools are consistently and effectively used to meet financial controls; manages labor cost, including average wage, to meet Area wage guidelines; reviews daily sales, food cost, cash, and labor reports and follows up on all variances from plan to meet or exceed Area Sales Plan. Works effectively with functional support partners to drive business results.

MARKETING - Ensures Area-wide consistency in execution of all marketing programs. Recognizes business generators, traffic patterns and acts to maximize opportunities. Coordinates local store marketing programs within the Area.

OPERATIONS - Develops CORE learnings and standards. Uses coaching plan, period and weekly calendars to drive restaurant visit agendas.

Conducts effective visits and documents visits. Ensures Area compliance with all training standards; ensures proper opening and closing security procedures are followed and signed cash and security policies are in place; ensures preventative maintenance and ongoing cleanliness programs are in place; ensures compliance with all municipal, state and national codes; conducts restaurant consultations according to Company guidelines; follows up on sanitation checklists. Maximizes use of current technology to continually leverage innovation.

Serves as an information resource for entire Area as well as peer group. Identifies and taps all existing resources and utilizes creative problem solving when faced with a new challenge.

SERVING THE CUSTOMER - Demonstrates "POSITIVE ENERGY" by handling customer concerns on the spot using LAST and by helping management teams and Team Members resolve customer concerns. Recognizes and rewards Customer Mania behavior.

Leads Rallies. Ensures managers are empowered to resolve customer complaints; ensures follow up on customer complaints; ensures flawless execution of new product rollouts; Total customer satisfaction communicated and participated at all levels; ensures product quality procedures are followed (i.e. food safety procedures, hold times, QA program).

SALES - Drives restaurant operations to achieve at or above standard results (i.e. customer service and CORE standards) and local store marketing. Drives GM and AM accountability for growing sales and executing standard processes and achieving restaurant metric standards.

Ensures metric board tracking and communication with team. Ensures restaurants are ready for marketing and product promotions and are suggestive selling. Follows-up with GM to ensure execution.

Visibly supports new restaurant development. Holds GM's and AM's accountable for participating in and executing company initiatives. Monitors success daily through Area Coach tools.

COMPANY REPRESENTATION

  • Creates and maintains a positive image within the community (with documented activities). Ensures incremental sales through out-of-store activities are profitable. Builds business by using company facilities proactively and efficiently in support of local organizations.

    Encourages participation in events and public service organizations which enhance the image of the company. Ensures compliance with company canister program.

Ensures ICOS processes are executed in the restaurant. Utilizes operating measures to monitor profit variables.

Reviews restaurants Management & Team Member schedule for effectiveness weekly. Ensures GM manages cash by using brand control procedures and shift drawer accountability enforced. Requires RGMs to involve their teams in setting and reaching restaurant goals.

Uses P&L, and other appropriate reports, to analyze their business and establish and execute tactics for improvement. Uses In-Restaurant coaching to improve performance. Conducts period and quarterly business reviews to ensure plans are in place to improve performance.

Significant communication aspect is communicating with restaurant teams and keeping Senior Area Coach and COO up to speed on the status of restaurant operations (providing operational reports and sharing/seeking advice on problem issues.)

Restaurant Team - providing leadership direction, motivating staff, giving direction and guidance, building trusting relationships.

Internal Staff - establishing and maintaining excellent relationships to enlist expertise in areas of need.

VI. Knowledge and Skill Requirements

Education:

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Experience:

5 years GM experience or equivalent, 2 years Area Coach experience or equivalent.

Specialization: (licenses, certifications, etc.)

Reliable transportation and maintains a valid driver's license and insurance for positions that require driving: Area Coach, Region Coach, General Manager, Assistant Manager and Shift Managers. In addition to reliable transportation, valid driver's license and insurance, Above Store Leaders with positions requiring significant business driving must maintain an acceptable driving record (MVR). Must maintain Serve-Safe certification.

As the store's nutrition professional, the primary responsibility of the NHC position is to provide science-based nutrition education/training to the store crew, our customers and the community as a whole, and drive store sales. The NHC is responsible for driving sales throughout the entire store, the supplement department, and the Nutrient to Know About specifically. The Nutrition Manager/NHC position is integral to fulfilling Natural Grocers guiding founding principle of providing nutrition education to empower our communities and employees to achieve health. Responsibilities POSITION PARAMETERS A. The Nutrition Manager/Nutritional Health Coach functions as the professional nutrition education resource for customers, employees and community members providing information on dietary supplements, food quality, nutrition, and company differentiators; drives store sales through community outreach, employee education, and promotion of NHC services, products, and events; and is a vitamin aisle employee with the same job responsibilities as all vitamin aisle employees. B. Nutrition Manager/Nutritional Health Coach Weekly Overview 1. For the NHC to successfully complete all responsibilities outlined in the job description the schedule requires a 40 hour workweek. a. Two days working in the vitamin aislesb. One day conducting individual coaching sessions with customers. c. One day "office" time: * Seek outreach opportunities and develop community relationships * Develop and implement local store marketing strategies to promote the in-store customer nutrition education classes, cooking demonstrations, and other store events and services in the store and out in the community. * Prepare for and conduct in-store classes, employee trainings, and community outreach * Complete continued education d. One day conducting outreach presentations, in-store customer nutrition education classes or cooking demonstrations. NUTRITIONAL HEALTH COACH DUTIES A. Educate employees and customers about nutrition, all products, and optimal health/healthy living with the intention of supporting store sales. 1. Conduct the nutrition portion of the Health Hotline/good4u crew trainings.2. Pull reports for employee LMS "Take-15" and Health Hotline walkthrough education.3. Create and maintain an employee "Glad You Asked" question center.4. Prepare for and present in-store customer nutrition education classes.5. Prepare for and conduct outreach presentations. B. Conduct Sit-Down/In-Store Nutritional Health Coaching SessionsC. Build relationships with community partners by spreading awareness of Natural Grocer's store services. This includes: 1. Seeking outreach presentation opportunities2. Establishing relationships with practitioners who recommend supplements and coaching services to their clients3. Promoting in-store classes and events outside of the store or on external websites4. Researching and contacting potential groups to use the store's meeting space5. Researching and contacting potential guest presenters D. Stay current with Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage NHC materials as a means of continued education. 1. Read and study the material provided by the Nutrition Education Department such as Health Hotline training material, NHC FYIs, NED bulletin and newsletters, in-store class material, continuing education, etc.2. Follow directions for assigned health supportive statement homework. E. Participate in Regional NHC conference calls.F. Attend Nutritional Health Coach Meetings for ongoing training and education.G. Conduct Book Club discussion group for customers and employees. This is an optional responsibility. NUTRITION MANAGER DUTIES A. Collaborate with the store manager on the development and implementation of the store's Nutrient to Know About strategies.B. Take an active leadership role in the planning and execution of store sales promotions, Natural Grocer's Employee Wellness Challenges, and other initiatives coordinated by the Home Office.C. Stay informed of key store performance metrics including Nutrient to Know About sales, turkey sales, vitamin sales/mix, and outreach coupon usage and redemption.D. Maintain and oversee the Political Campaign Center.E. Maintain the Customer Literature Files Cabinet.F. Assist the Vitamin Manager with ordering books by maintaining the book department inventory, appearance, and reference books.G. Assist with creating product displays (for events, featured books, and company sales focuses).H. Work with the grocery and vitamin managers to make sure the items that you recommend are consistently stocked. Maintain a written list and give the list to the appropriate department managers. I. Coach staff on using health supportive statements when engaging with customers.J. Keep staff informed on talking points related to upcoming events, classes, promotions, and company initiatives.K. Conduct new employee NHC Meet & Greets VITAMIN AISLE DUTIES A. Customer service is the primary responsibility of every employee. NHCs are considered key vitamin aisle employees, as a nutrition resource for customers as well as employees. While the NHC is considered a key vitamin aisle employee, he or she should be prepared to assist customers in any section/department of the store and may be assigned to work in other departments as needed. 1. Greet customers as you work in the vitamin aisle.2. Serve as the store's primary source of nutrition information.3. Help customers find products.4. Answer customer questions.5. Answer the phone.6. Take special orders.7. Educate customers and help them make informed choices.8. Engage in conversations with customers to promote sales and events.9. Promote the Nutrient to Know About with customers.10. Promote NHC classes and other store events and promotions to customers. B. Serve as Event Ambassador as assigned by store manager.C. Other vitamin aisle duties: the Vitamin Manager will provide the NHC with daily tasks when the NHC is scheduled for floor duty: 1. Stock/Back stock.2. Face product.3. Check product expiration dates.4. Store cleaning. D. Front End work. All employees are responsible for supporting cashiers and making sure customers are processed through in a timely manner. Keep in mind this is a very important aspect of customer service. 1. Be prepared to help with bagging assistance, assisting customers to their car, and cart checks when needed.2. NHCs should use this opportunity to be a role model to other employees on how to effectively promote in-store events and their NHC services. SUPERVISION A. The Store Manager 1. Responsible for assigning duties to support the needs of the store.2. Responsible for creating a set schedule that must remain the same week-to-week.3. Responsible for performance evaluations and raise evaluations. B. The NHC Regional Manager 1. Responsible for coordinating NHC training on-going position support and training, and evaluations.2. Provides input to Store Manager for performance evaluations and raise evaluations. 3. If a store is not assigned an NHC Regional Manager, an NED representative will provide ongoing support to the NHC and will complete the NHC's annual, Health Hotline employee training, and Coaching evaluations. C. The overall supervisor of the NHC Program is the Executive Vice President of Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage. a. Responsible for defining the parameters of the position and defining the direction of the NHC Program.b. Will provide input to the Store Manager and NHC Regional Manager about performance for evaluation purposes. MAINTAINING NUTRITION KNOWLEDGE AND CONTINUING EDUCATION 1. A professional position is never static. The nutrition field is a dynamic one, with new information constantly coming to light. NHCs must stay current with nutrition research, nutrition information and new developments in the field. This is in addition to the education provided by the company. NHCs must complete 16 hours of Continuing Education (CE) time on the clock each year. Opportunities for CE include reading, attending seminars, listening to recommended podcasts, webinars, and networking with other nutrition professionals.2. If an NHC's degree and/or certification require continuing education to maintain the degree and/or certification, then the NHC must fulfill those requirements. LEADERSHIP AND PROFESSIONALISM 1. NHCs are to be professional at all times and provide appropriate leadership for the staff and the store.2. NHCs are responsible for driving store sales and promotions through employee and customer education.3. Leader effectiveness requires treating people decently while at the same time successfully motivating them toward high performance in their work.4. Positive and calm communication with staff and customers is expected at all times.5. Show the highest level of respect and integrity in day-to-day actions in the store with both employees and customers.6. Do the job in a consistent, calm, and positive manner. Qualifications Education, Skills & Experience * NHCs are required to have a degree/certification in nutrition or a related field (e.g., dietetics,Bachelors of Science or Masters in biology, biochemistry, naturopathy) from a college or university accredited by a regional and/or national accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as reliable, or from a college or university accredited by the Canadian government. Additionally, the school must have higher education approval from the state commission. * Proof of education must be submitted at time of application. Continuing education, if required to maintain degree/certification, must be fulfilled throughout tenure of employment. Proof of maintenance of degree/certification must be submitted as necessary. * NHCs must be able to obtain and maintain liability insurance.
