Handel and Haydn Society | Archivist
Description: The Handel and Haydn Society seeks a professional archivist to manage its historical collections spanning three centuries of activities. The Archivist will collect, organize, and provide access to a wide range of material relating to the administrative, business, and performance activities of H+H; process collections; and create finding aids in compliance with professional archival standards and practices. They will maintain H+H's performance history database, lead digital preservation activities, and provide research assistance to both internal and external users. This is a flexible, part-time position of 20 hours per week, located at the H+H offices in the Back Bay area of Boston.
Reports to: Director of Finance and Administration
Acquire and process collections and create finding aids
Manage performance history database (OPAS) and associated reference resources (Season FAQ, concert counts for program books)
Lead digital preservation activities, including:
Implementing the digital asset management system Preservica and managing interim access platforms
Planning and executing digitization projects
Perform research and respond to reference queries for staff, patrons, and external researchers
Assess collection for preservation and conservation needs and manage offsite collections
Assist in records management activities, including
Assisting employees in records appraisal in accordance with document retention and destruction policy
Preparing, scheduling, and submitting records transfers to Iron Mountain
Provide regular content for social media, newsletters, press releases, and other publicity materials; collaborate with colleagues in using archival collections to promote the organization and deepen understanding of the institution
Recruit and supervise interns in archival projects, including collections processing, data entry, and reference resource creation
Collaborate with colleagues in development to identify and pursue funding for projects related to the archives.
Other duties as assigned
Master's Degree in Library and Information Science required or equivalent training/experience can be supplemented for degree requirement
Exceptional organization, communication, and research skills
Demonstrated experience with metadata standards and implementation
Relational database experience
Knowledge of digital preservation best practices
Superior attention to detail
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
Creativity, flexibility, excellent judgment and initiative
Professionalism in all settings
Familiarity with Baroque and Classical music
Salary is commensurate with experience.
Position requires occasional lifting of heavy printed materials, large boxes and retail merchandise as well as the repetitive, daily use of a computer.
