Gannett Fleming's Environmental Services Business Line is seeking a highly motivated Architectural Historian with the desire to expand their skill set into Environmental Planning practice. You will provide technical expertise across a diverse client base for a variety of assignments based out of our Raleigh, NC office.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to infrastructure projects requiring planning, environmental analysis, and documentation in accordance with NEPA and permitting, while growing an architectural history practice and growing professionally.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with the overall execution of projects in the public sector across a variety of markets and sectors. Specific focus consists of interpretation of federal, state and local agency regulations; planning and executing analysis consistent with historic preservation principals and regulations; planning and executing analysis of a wide range of environmental resources in both the natural and social environments; and preparation of work products including documents that meet the requirements of the NEPA, supporting technical reports, and permit applications.

Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with projects requiring compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act as well as everything under the NEPA "umbrella." This includes all facets of the natural and social environments. The envisioned position is roughly a 50:50 split between historic property assessments and broader NEPA assessments.

  • Conducting research in support of historic property inventories and National Register (NR) evaluations. Developing historic and/or architectural contexts.

  • Planning and leading field investigation for Historic Resource Surveys and Assessments. Some travel will be required and may include overnight stays.

  • Reporting results of research and field investigations and making NR eligibility recommendations. Completing all required architectural forms and associated documentation in accordance with state requirements.

  • Assisting with environmental analysis for multi-discipline design projects for a variety of markets (e.g., transportation, water, and facilities).

  • Assisting with coordination with other internal design disciplines, subconsultants, subcontractors, and regulatory and resource agencies.

  • Assisting with a wide range of public engagement activities and meetings.

  • Assisting with project management duties, such as developing statements of services, cost proposals, and managing financial and other project records.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in history, historic preservation, architectural history, or closely related field. A master's degree is highly desired but not required.

  • Meet the Secretary of Interiors' Professional Qualification Standards for Historic Architecture (Appendix A of 36 CFR Part 61).

  • Minimum 7 years of experience and increasing responsibility in the AEC industry delivering consulting services for infrastructure projects.

  • Thorough understanding of applicable federal and state environmental regulations.

  • Communicates well verbally and in writing.

  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage and track data, project deliverables, and schedules.

  • Strong MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Project).

  • Proficient with Esri mapping software.
