Job Summary

Provide complete planning and architectural services related to improvements to or remodeling of facilities related to the BYU campus, and minor new buildings. The planning and architectural services include, but not limited to the following: Meeting with clients, concept studies, preliminary plans, working drawings, specification preparation, assist with the preparation of project approval forms, assist with project inspections, approve shop drawings.

Organize and maintain electronic database of as-built plans for campus buildings. Provide technical assistance to campus AutoCAD and Revit users; establish standards for campus CAD/BIM database network; coordinate use of CAD/BIM database files on campus. Serves all university functions requiring floor plans and related database information (including plans for Space Management, OIT, Mail Services, Utilities, University Police, Scheduling, and Access Services.)

This position is the CAD/BIM Coordinator and facilities database specialist. The duties of this position involve the production of standardized drawings produced by the various facilities' functions, the organized storage and retrieval of facilities plans and associated database information, and technical assistance to both providers and users of information contained in the facilities CAD/BIM database. Duties of this position are greatly affected by the needs of all users of the campus facilities CAD/BIM database.

Essential Functions

  • Preparation of drawings for shop projects

  • Determine project requirements and assemble appropriate design team members. Integrate furnishings, electrical, mechanical, and communication systems, as required, into architectural project.

  • Develop preliminary drawings and design based on information gathered.

  • Obtain cost summary by working with cost estimator, material suppliers, and other applicable entities. Review cost summary to ensure all cost factors have been considered.

  • Prepare final plans and other necessary documents that thoroughly convey pertinent information of approved project.

  • Assist shop personnel in solving problems that develop during construction.

  • Obtain approvals and adjust budgets if unexpected construction circumstances arise

  • Ensure proper use, warranties, and quality control of products.

  • Initiate final review procedures for approved projects and secure required approvals.

  • Prepare and maintain building plans (20%)

  • Create drawing files for buildings not in the system.

  • Verify and update those files created previously.

  • Review all construction and remodel jobs to identify structure changes for update process.

  • Update files as changes and modifications are made.

  • Assign room/door numbers within university guidelines, working closely with the space management dept.

  • Distribute updated files to all designated departments.

  • Maintain floor plan and map website

  • Maintain graphic campus map.

  • Archive drawings and specifications for all campus buildings

  • Organize and store hard copies of as-built plans for campus buildings.

  • Organize and store electronic copies of as-built plans and specifications for campus buildings.

  • Develop system of easy retrieval of plans and specifications for authorized users.

  • Verify that plans and specifications are promptly stored in the appropriate locations after receiving as-built drawings and specifications for new buildings.

  • Provide technical assistance to campus AutoCAD and Revit users (15%)

  • Provide technical assistance to all CAD/BIM operators and managers.

  • Provide training to all CAD/BIM operators and managers.

  • Develop CAD/BIM menus and productivity tools for use by all CAD/BIM operators.

  • Write custom menus and macros for special functions when requested by CAD/BIM users.

  • Review and recommend specialized software applications.

  • Evaluate the need for additional CAD/BIM hardware and recommend additional CAD/BIM hardware where needed.

  • Help coordinate licensing of Autodesk for campus departments as needed. Work with BYU OIT department and BYU Construction Management department who are also on the contract to help with licensing questions.

  • Beta testing for Autodesk products which provides an early understanding of product changes.

  • Attend BIM coordination meetings on outside projects, assist with clash detection.

  • Establish standards for campus facilities CAD/BIM database network (5%)

  • Develop standards such as title blocks, layers, line types, text fonts, etc. for use with all drawings in the CAD/BIM database network.

  • Develop procedures for common communication between CAD/BIM users on the CAD/BIM database network with cooperative use of symbol base. Develop and maintain BIM execution plan for in house users and BYU outside architects and engineers.

  • Coordinate use of CAD/BIM database files on campus network (10%)

  • Instruct all CAD/BIM database network users on the proper use and procedures of the system.

  • Set up file access protocol to ensure the integrity of the database files.

  • Review database file usage for proper use of file access.

  • Perform special projects as requested (5%)

  • Perform any task assigned by supervision in the planning and construction departments.

  • Citizenship (interpersonal/interaction skills, dedication to the university mission, professionalism

  • Promote a positive image of the department and the university.

  • Support activities of the department and other university departments.

  • Relate will with other employees.

  • Adhere to university standards and policies.


Minimum education/experience required:

  • Bachelor's degree with 6 years of experience using AutoCAD and Revit or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or Facilities Management.

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:

  • Expert ability in the use of AutoCAD and Revit, which includes a knowledge of the drafting commands, menu customization and macro command structure.

  • Working knowledge of computers, computer networking, and CAD/BIM database drawing management.

  • Understanding of basic drafting principles in architecture and all other disciplines required for the maintenance of campus facilities.

  • Autodesk certificate and architectural background is required.
