Position Summary & Description



Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) invite applicants for an Architectural Designer 1 position in Engineering and Construction.


The position requires a proficiency in AutoCAD software to operate and maintain the department's computer-based drafting system. The incumbent will be responsible for reviewing and preparing of detailed architectural and MEP design drawings for both In-House and professional designed projects. Perform field inspections of construction projects, prepares technical field reports and recommends construction design solutions to conform to University Standards. Must be able to locate and mark University underground utilities in response to Pa One Call notices and coordinate this work with outside vendors and contractors. Maintain a University wide utility mapping system of all underground utilities and detailed utility maps of individual utilities. Visit construction sites and view excavations in order to verify utility locations with a handheld GPS device to update utility maps. Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Education and Training

  • Successful completion of the training program for an Architectural Designer Trainee;or

  • One year of professional architectural experience which involved designing components of commercial, institutional, or educational buildings or structures, and a bachelor's degree in architecture or architectural engineering or a closely related field which included major course work in architectural design;or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training in architectural design work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two-year associate's degree in architectural or engineering drafting design.

  • Minimum five years experience in a drafting/designer environment for commercial construction projects.

Necessary Special Requirement

  • Certain positions in this class may require licensure as a Registered Architect by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or a reciprocal jurisdiction.

Candidates must have the communication skills and cross-cultural abilities to maximize their effectiveness with diverse groups of students, colleagues, and community members.

The salary for this position is determined by the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement. External applicants will be offered the minimum rate of pay for this position which is $49,076.00 annually.

Essential Functions

The work of this position occurs in a typical office environment. Although infrequent, periods of heavy exertion may occur. Incumbent must have the following abilities:

  • Ability to travel to field locations and meeting/training sites by motor vehicle when required.

  • Communicate both orally and in writing to issue, receive and carry out instructions and orders effectively and to convey information to a variety of co-workers and the general public

  • Use a variety of common office machines such as telephones, calculators, copiers, computer terminals, keyboards, video display terminals, auxiliary printers and similar equipment.

  • Employee must be able to observe and react to hazard warnings, backup alarms, flashing lights, voice commands and hand signals

  • Perform manual duties such as lifting and carrying various weight limits.

  • Operate office equipment which may require stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching and prolonged standing.

  • Provide assistance and guidance to internal and external customers.

  • Follow oral and written instructions
