Archaeologist 2

This is a full time position located at the Capitol Annex Building in Baton Rouge, LA.

No Civil Service test score is required in order to be considered for this vacancy.

The primary responsibilities of this position are:

• Managing and maintaining the records associated with the site files;

• Assigning site numbers, reviewing and editing site forms, and providing technical comments in a timely manner;

• Maintaining the site file database and the Division of Archaeology's Geographical Information System (GIS); and

• Continue the processing of older problematic site forms to improve the Division of Archaeology's GIS system, and the Louisiana Culture Resources Map.

Required skills and abilities:

• Familiarity with archaeological field methods and site forms;

• Experience with ESRI ArcGIS PRO desktop or online applications;

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Access, and Word;

• Ability to communicate clearly and accurately via phone, email, letter, and in person about our office's site form standards.

Desired skills and abilities:

• Archaeological field experience, particularly in the southeastern US;

• Experience with completing or processing site forms;

• Experience working for a cultural resource management firm;    

• Knowledge of the Section 106 process.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A baccalaureate degree in anthropology, archaeology, maritime studies, geography, history, or heritage resources, plus one year of professional level experience in New World archaeology (e.g. archaeological field experience, archaeological laboratory experience, archaeological collections management experience, archaeological research experience, public archaeology experience, or any combination of these areas totaling one year of experience).

NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Function of Work:

To manage several specific archaeological programs.

Level of Work:

Advanced.

Supervision Received:

Broad review from the Archaeologist Manager or other professional manager.

Supervision Exercised:

Functional supervision of several program areas over students, surveyors, contractors; and direct over unclassified Project Leaders.

Location of Work:

Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Department of Transportation and Development.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from Archaeologist Manager by subordinate relationship and lack of supervision over subordinate archaeologists.

Differs from Archaeologist 1 by more complex duties such as responsibility for a statewide program area.Manages the Archaeological Grants Program.

Supervises field archaeologist conducting surveys as part of the Archaeological Grants Program.

Works regularly with university and private industry archaeologist to develop archaeological survey and site testing projects that conform to federal budgetary and program guidelines.

Develops Scopes-of-services for archaeological survey and testing projects.

Acts as technical expert on Historical Archaeology and on Underwater Archaeology.

Coordinates the permits for archaeological investigation on state land.

Develops and periodically revises the Louisiana Comprehensive Archaeological Plan, which entails: holding public hearings; soliciting comments from archaeologists, land-use managers, private industry, and the public; identifying recordation and preservation needs; in conjunction with others, setting program priorities; and preparing the final document for publication.

Functions as curator for archaeological collections under the Division of Archaeology's control.

Acts as office authority on artifact conservation matters.
