Recreation Specialist-Aquatics

Chapel Hill Aquatics is currently seeking an experienced individual to fill the role of Aquatics Specialist. This position is essential for ensuring the efficient operation of our aquatic facilities through effective pool maintenance and staff management. Essential Functions

Pool Maintenance
Oversee all aspects of pool maintenance, including water quality management, filtration system operation, and facility cleanliness. Develop and implement maintenance schedules to ensure that the facilities meet regulatory standards and provide a safe and enjoyable experience for patrons.
Staff Supervision and Training
Assists with interviewing and hiring temporary staff with a focus to recruit the best candidates. This position will have the opportunity to ensure leading new staff through the onboarding process to ensure staff will be successful in exceeding departmental performance expectations. Trains, supervises and evaluates temporary lifeguards, instructors, coaches and center aids at the facility. Assists with organizing work assignments. Facilitates staff in-service trainings as well as American Red Cross lifeguard classes.
Facility Operations
Assists with scheduling of pool and staff. Reserves pool and facility space and supervises facility use by rental groups and contract instructors. Helps maintain aquatic webpage. Inventories first aid supplies, pool chemicals, and program supplies. Makes purchase recommendations. Assumes aquatic facilities (Homestead Aquatic Center, Community Center Pool, AD Clark Outdoor Pool) oversight in absence of the Aquatic Supervisor and Assistant Aquatic Supervisor.
Safety
Maintains a safe environment for staff and participants; ensures proper guard/patron safety ratios; completes daily pool reports and monthly facility and equipment safety inspections. Reports accidents/incidents and operational/mechanical issues. Updates SDS notebooks; maintains staff certification database; maintains Lifeguard certification; completes monthly safety trainings; obtains/maintains Certified Pool Operator certification. Performs lifeguard duties, enters rotations for pool surveillance; ensures proper use of pool equipment; handles crowd control; enforces pool and facility rules; performs accident prevention measures. Recognizes and responds to emergencies and renders CPR and First Aid when necessary.
Customer Service
Leads by example to provide excellent customer service. Promotes the department in the community and assists with department special events. Maintains a good working knowledge of departmental programming. Utilizes recreation software and good cash handling practices, assists with front desk operations and participant registration for programs, passes and visits.
Outdoor Pool
Assists with opening and closing pool for season and overseeing daily operation. Assists with closing pool at end of season and performing weekly checks during off-season.

When and Where You'll Work
Work schedule for this position requires mostly weekdays and some weekends when necessary. The work is typically performed at an indoor or outdoor pool facility.
Physical Demands
The work requires intermittent sitting, standing or stooping and the ability to maintain focus for up to 60 minutes at a time. The employee uses equipment that requires a high degree of dexterity and medium strength. The employee is required to lift a maximum of 50 pounds. Employee must also be able to kneel, squat, reach and regularly move lane lines and set up equipment for swim meets.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge Of:
Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
Water Safety Practices
Chemicals used for daily pool maintenance and proper application
City, county, state and federal guidelines for pool operations
Proper usage of emergency water safety equipment such as backboards and rescue tubes
High-quality customer service
Principles, practices and trends in management and supervision
Computer software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher
Staff, Facility and Programming Software and processes
Relevant town codes and department rules and regulations
Ability to:
Swim and assist drowning swimmers in a short amount of time

Licenses/Certifications/Education
Required:
Bachelor's degree in recreation or sports management, related field or equivalent experience
Two years' experience in swimming pool management, preferably supplemented by experience in an organized community recreation program.
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification
Valid North Carolina Driver's License and availability of private transportation or the ability to provide transportation between job sites.
Preferred:
Certified Pool Operator or ability to obtain within six months of hire
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or ability to obtain within six months of hire
Water Exercise Instructor or ability to obtain within six months of hire
Supplemental Information
This classification has been designated as Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
This classification is driving essential and required to conform to the Town's Safe Driving and Accident Procedures.
