ABOUT THE POSITION AND OUR AGENCY

WE'RE HIRING

The City is looking for individuals to join our Aquatics Department Team.

Part-time Pool Lifeguard, Beach Lifeguard, and Swim/Water Polo Coach

(Pay range, $20.10 - $24.43 Hourly)

Individuals may work up to 20 hours per week,

not to exceed 980 hours in a fiscal year (June 1 - July 30).

Pool Lifeguard: Under supervision, performs varied lifesaving and accident prevention services at the Community Pool. Ensures the safety of patrons in and around the pool by providing constant surveillance of participants. Responsible for assisting and rescuing distressed swimmers.

Beach Lifeguard: Ensure the safety of swimmers in and around the beach by providing constant surveillance. Monitor swimmers, enforces safety rules, and responds to emergencies quickly and appropriately. Provide emergency medical care until emergency officials arrive. Beach lifeguards may also be responsible for instructing junior lifeguards and ocean recreation activities such as surfing, kayaking, and sailing.

Swim and Water Polo Coach: Plans, organizes, and directs the instruction of practices, meets, and events.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

Applies to all 3 positions, below (unless specified):

  • Ensures swimmers are supervised through constant surveillance.

  • Enforces rules and regulations, and maintains order in area of assignment, In accordance with appropriate Federal and State guidelines (e.g. The United States Swimming Association rules and regulations)

  • Ensures area of assignment are clean and well maintained.

  • Enforce safety rules and regulations.

  • Maintains all pool and lifeguard equipment.

  • Responds to emergencies quickly and appropriately on land and in water.

  • Recognizes and performs aquatic emergency rescues, administers artificial respiration, CPR, and first aid, when necessary.

  • Respond to public inquiries relating to programs and provide safety information to patrons.

  • Attends all staff meetings and in-service training sessions.

  • Maintains a professional appearance by wearing City issued lifeguard uniform at all times while on duty and adhering to the uniform policy.

  • Assists other Lifeguards and personnel as necessary. Follows all workplace policies and procedures including supervising and maintaining assigned area of responsibility.

  • Reports and keeps management informed of pool maintenance needs, and any significant problems.

  • Completes various forms and paperwork pertinent to the day-to-day operation of an aquatic facility.

  • Assist with opening, closing and all operating procedures and ensure they are completed properly.

  • Maintains attendance and report to work on time.

  • Provide emergency medical care until emergency officials arrive.

  • Respond to questions and inquiries from the general public in a professional manner.

  • Lifeguard for special events, camps, and school groups.

  • Provide swim instruction for middle school, private, semi-private and group classes.

  • Pool Lifeguard and Swim/Water Polo Coach: Maintains pool area by putting in and taking out lane lines, cleaning decks, covering and uncovering the pool, and cleaning drains. Removes unnecessary equipment from the pool area.

  • Pool Lifeguard: Checks pool chemicals to determine appropriate levels as needed.

  • Swim/Water Polo Coach: Develop, organize, and direct the instructional program for the city's Swim and/or Water Polo Team.

  • Swim/Water Polo Coach: Supervise and coach scheduled workouts.

  • Swim/Water Polo Coach: Prepare and present awards and certificates to program participants.

  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

POOL LIFEGUARD

Education/Certification:

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.

  • Water Safety Instructor Certificate or ability to obtain the certification within thirty (30) days of hire.

Experience Required:

  • Must pass the swim test of 300 yards.

  • Possess a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.

  • Applicants must be at least 15 years old.

Knowledge of:

  • Working knowledge of lifesaving techniques including water rescues, first aid and CPR.

  • Effective customer service techniques.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Respond to and handle emergency incidents in an appropriate manner.

  • Strong swimming and lifesaving abilities.

  • Lifeguarding, first aid and CPR techniques.

  • Alert, attentive, and responsible.

  • Instruct aquatic programs.

  • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public.

  • Provide effective customer service.

  • Successful completion of required health and drug screen and training program.

  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred but not required.

BEACH LIFEGUARD

Education Certification:

  • Must attend scheduled USLA training (40 hours).

  • Current American Red Cross CPR and American Red Cross First Aid Certification or ability to obtain within thirty (30) days.

  • Lifeguards must possess Basic Lifesaving certification.

  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification a plus.

Experience Required:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

  • Some prior recreational experience is preferred.

Knowledge of:

  • Working knowledge of lifesaving techniques including water rescues, first aid and CPR.

  • Effective customer service techniques.

  • A general knowledge of recreational and educational activities is required.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

  • Applicants must have ability to work in aquatic related programs.

  • Must be able to remain calm in stressful situations and respond to emergency situations.

  • Must possess the ability to interact and relate effectively with the public.

  • Must be able to pass an ocean swim test of 500 yards in 10 minutes or less.

  • Applicants must be at least 16 years old.

SWIM/WATER POLO COACH

Education/Certification:

High school degree or equivalent.

  • Valid California driver's license

  • Registered with the United States Swimming Association as a coaching member.

  • American Red Cross CPR, First Aid and AED certification.

Experience Required:

  • Prior swimming, recreation leadership/coaching or related experience.

Knowledge of

  • Principles and practices of coaching techniques.

  • Applicable City and State Codes and regulations and related United States Coastal Section and Age Group Swim Team rules and regulations.

  • Organizational skills, program management and scheduling.

  • Bilingual Spanish preferred.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be able to pass a swim test of 500 yards in ten minutes or less.

  • Exercise independent judgment, and common sense in the performance of duties.

  • Direct, coordinate, promote and evaluate program functions and activities.

  • Maintain control and orderly conduct of participants in the program.

  • Respond to emergency and problem situations in a rapid and effective manner.

  • Interpret and enforce applicable laws, rules and regulations in an objective and even-handed manner.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Supervise and establish rapport with young people who are participants in the program and demonstrate tact and diplomacy with co-workers, participants, and the public.

Under the terms of the city's benefits plan and policies, part-time (temporary, seasonal, or extra help) employees are not eligible for benefits, other than those required by federal or state law (e.g. paid leave in accordance with Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 - AB1522 and City policy). The City does not participate in Social Security; in lieu of social security, part-time employees, not currently CalPERS members, are enrolled in the City's 457 Deferred Compensation retirement plan.
