Location

In this position you can expect to work on site at the Aquatics Office, located inside the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center.

What You'll Do

With a staff of over 400 lifeguards across 15 indoor and 16 outdoor swimming pools, it takes a team of dedicated, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic individuals to ensure the highest-quality aquatic programs, safety, and customer service are being delivered to communities across Denver. Denver Parks and Recreation is currently seeking an adept and accomplished recreation professional to join this team as an Aquatics Coordinator at the Aquatics Office, located inside the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center.

In this position, you will support year-round efforts to recruit, train, and retain staff members across Denver Parks and Recreation's diverse network of facilities. In addition, you will evaluate the staffing and scheduling needs across these facilities to anticipate hiring needs, develop pool and program schedules, and partner with other Aquatic Coordinators and agencies to deliver the resources necessary for successful facility operations. This is an exciting opportunity to work for a large and diverse aquatics department while serving the community and engaging in professional growth opportunities.

Specifically as an Aquatics Coordinator at the Aquatics Office you will:

  • Partner with the Office of Human Resources to assist with the recruitment, assessment, and onboarding of lifeguard candidates

  • Contact lifeguard candidates to discuss employment, training opportunities, and pool placement

  • Schedule, conduct, and evaluate American Red Cross Lifeguarding training opportunities for lifeguard candidates, including instruction and maintenance of course records

  • Evaluate and anticipate the staffing and programming needs of multiple facilities

  • Create, implement, and lead aquatics programs

  • Partner with other Aquatics Coordinators across multiple facilities to develop staff, pool, and program schedules

  • Evaluate success of programs and providing feedback to the Aquatics Core team

  • Maintain records of employee certifications while proactively planning recertification opportunities for internal staff members

  • Create and foster partnerships with community leaders, neighborhood organizations, local schools, and other community partners to design programs that fit their unique needs and promote employment opportunities

  • Collaborate with the Senior Recreation Supervisor and Program Administrator to identify community and facility needs, and create plans to address these needs

  • Conduct monthly in-service training on emergency procedures for Recreation and Aquatics staff

  • Collaborate with and contribute to the entire Aquatics Division to support the core functions and individual natatorium operations as necessary

  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested

Our ideal candidate will have excellent customer service and communication skills with an eye for innovation, efficiency, and safety.

Additionally, our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Experience scheduling and staffing multiple pools

  • Knowledge of successful recruitment and retention strategies for lifeguards

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including experience hiring, working with, and mentoring youth

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Digiquatics

  • Experience delivering American Red Cross learning materials and classes

  • Experience performing lead work/supervisory duties over aquatics staff

  • Experience engaging communities in aquatics programming and implementing new programming based on community feedback

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certifications

  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and/or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certifications

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC certificate

  • Experience: Three (3) years of work experience instructing in an organized aquatic program involving the monitoring of pool equipment, pool chemicals and pool operations

  • Licensures/Certification(s): Requires a Lifeguard Training Certification, CPR and AED Certifications for Professional Rescuers, and First Aid Certification at the time of application; requires a Lifeguard Instructor Certification, First Aid Instructor Certification, and a Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator Certification prior to completion of the probationary period (licensure and certification must be kept current as a condition of employment)

  • Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements
