The Chico Area Recreation and Park District is looking to hire enthusiastic and energetic LIFEGUARDS and SWIM INSTRUCTORS to join our Summer 2024 Aquatic's Team!
With the general guidance and direction of the Recreation Supervisor and/or the Recreation Coordinator, the Head Lifeguard will assist with the implementation and administration of the aquatics program. The Head Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons and participants by maintaining control over the pool area.
This position is for fully-certified lifeguards ONLY. We will only consider those who are either lifeguard certified or scheduled for a class.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: May include, but are not limited to, the following
Responsible for supervising lifeguards, swim instructors, and swim coaches.
Provide appropriate preventative lifeguarding and patron surveillance.
Enforce pool rules.
Execute water rescues and emergency assists to patrons using appropriate life guarding techniques.
Administer CPR and first aid to patrons.
Complete safety and hazard checklists as required.
Successfully demonstrate certification requirements during periodic drills and in-service.
Develop, implement and facilitate safety trainings, instructional sessions, and in-services to ensure maintenance of certifications to staff as required.
Provide quality customer service; have positive communication and interaction with patrons, program participants, parents, customers, and co-workers, and maintain a professional demeanor.
Teach swimming lessons and create lesson plans as required.
Complete administrative work such as incident/accident reports, staff schedule, concession reports, daily pool reports, swim lesson evaluations, and staff evaluations as required.
Assists with staff scheduling to ensure that adequate coverage of pool areas are maintained.
Teach, model, and encourage staff of their job duties and responsibilities.
Provide timely and appropriate feedback to staff as needed
Acts as a replacement or finds replacements for schedule gaps for lifeguards and/or swim instructors.
Acts as a liaison to the public, answer questions and handles customer concerns and complaints.
Open and close facility as needed.
Perform maintenance duties when needed.
May drive a District vehicle or personal vehicle to conduct District business.
Perform other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience Guidelines
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
EDUCATION/TRAINING: Enrolled high school student in good standing with valid work permit (16 years old minimum) or equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. One year of college-level coursework in recreation, sports administration/management, physical education, or a closely related field is desirable.
EXPERIENCE:
Must have at least two years of experience working in an aquatic setting.
Must have at least two full seasons of work experience as a lifeguard/swim instructor.
Must have at least one year of experience supervising employees.
KNOWLEDGE OF: Advanced knowledge of Preventative lifeguarding techniques
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a current Lifeguard Training certification (or equivalent) per aquatic season requirements.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification (or equivalent) per aquatic season requirements.
Possession of or ability to obtain a current First Aid for Public Safety Personnel

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work performed in an outdoor environment subject to weather conditions, sun exposure, and water exposure. Duties include exposure to recreation-related field noise or street noise. Travel in between sites within a 6 mile radius may be required. Employees will receive 40 hours of sick time each year.
