Description

Performs semiskilled work monitoring pool patrons to ensure safety, maintaining the pool and equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under moderate supervision.

Examples of Duties

  • Monitors poolpatrons to ensure safety;enforces allpoolrules and regulations to maintain a safe aquaticenvironment;assists swimmers in need and performs rescues and firstaid as necessary.

  • Plans and facilitatesexercise classes, watersafetyclasses, and Lifeguard certification classes; tests patron's swimmingabilityto determine aquatic skilllevel; assists with planning and facilitation of other department programs.

  • Assists with scheduling of the aquatic facility; works with outside organizations for group reservations and programming.

  • Assumesthe duties ofthe Aquatic ProgramsSupervisorin his/herabsence.

  • Assists Aquatic ProgramsSupervisor in trainingaquatics staffon safetyprotocols, maintenance, conductingexercise classes, and otheraquatic division duties.

  • Maintains cleanliness ofthe pooldeck, surroundingareas, poolequipment, and showerareas;monitors poolchemicallevels to maintain within safe, recommended levels; backwashes filtersystemto maintain idealoperatingconditions.

  • Performsroutine maintenance on poolequipmentand machinery;identifies maintenance issues thatneed to beaddressed and reports to supervisor.

  • Participates in programs forcontinuingeducation and to maintain certifications.

  • Assists with special events and other departmental programs; assists with maintenance in other areas of the department.

  • Assists with administrative support tasks such as producing or printing flyers for aquatic or other departmental programs.

Typical Qualifications

MinimumEducation and Experience:

  • Highschooldiploma orGED, orequivalentcombination ofeducation and experience.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth ofVirginia.

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Required.

  • Water Safety Instructor Certification Required.

  • Aqua Fitness Instructor Certification Preferredor within six months of hire.

  • Lifeguard Instructor Certification Preferred or within a year of hire.

  • Aquatic Facility Operator Preferredor within 18 months of hire.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledgeofwatersafetyrules, generalpoolpolicies, and Lifeguarding, FirstAid, and CPRpractices andtechniques.

  • Generalknowledgeofpoolcleaningand maintenance practices.

Skills:

  • Swimming,communication, customerservice, supervisory, and teachingskills.

Abilities:

  • Physicalabilityto performrescues and assistdisabled persons.

  • Abilityto take quickand appropriate action understressfulconditions.

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment.

  • Work is primarily performed indoors, but is exposed to temperature changes and/or extreme noise, odors, heights, depths, and/or dust.
