Nature of Work
This is specialized recreation work and limited supervisory work in conducting swimming classes and lessons and supervising public swimming activities.
Work involves responsibility for teaching and conducting a variety of swimming classes and lessons and for supervising regular swimming activities.
Work also involves responsibility for assisting in the operation and maintenance of the pool and equipment. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed by a supervisor through discussions, periodic observations, and review of reports. Conducts and instructs a variety of classes for beginning, experienced and handicapped swimmers; conducts and instructs water exercise classes, water safety classes, and lifeguard classes; prepares class lesson plans and teaches; maintains lesson records and files.
Supervises and assists subordinate lifeguards and aquatic aids in observing and overseeing swimming activities, enforcing water safety rules and regulations, maintaining order and discipline; rescuing swimmers in distress, administering first aid; maintaining life saving equipment, cleaning the pool and adjacent areas, and in setting up the facility for swimming meets and special events. Opens the facility for public use and secures the facility at closing time. Inspects the pool and equipment for proper operation; checks and controls pool chemistry; performs routine maintenance on pool, equipment and facilities.
Performs routine janitorial duties to include, but not limited to, cleaning mirrors, windows, blinds, counters, furniture, sweeping, mopping, dusting, emptying trash, picking up litter, replenishing paper products, cleaning restrooms/shower areas, etc. Operates a cash register and collects revenues; prepares reports. Requires regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others and work well as a team.
Answers the telephone and provides information regarding facility operations and fees; maintains grounds around the facility. Performs related work as required.
Physical And Environmental Factors:
Work is performed at a public aquatic facility. Work exposes employee to potential chemical hazards and physical hazards.
Work requires frequent physical effort such as sitting, walking, standing, climbing, swimming, and lifting and carrying light to heavy objects. Work also requires physical dexterity in the frequent use of hand-to-eye coordination and manipulative skills using fingers, limbs and body in swimming and operating pool equipment.

Minimum Education, Training and Experience
High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency and some experience as a qualified lifeguard and instructor at a large public swimming pool or aquatic facility; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the following listed knowledge, skills and abilities:
Knowledge of the methods, principles and techniques involved in lifesaving, swimming instruction, first aid and water safety. Some knowledge of the principles and methods involved in the operation and maintenance of a public swimming pool. Ability to organize and instruct a variety of swimming classes.
Ability to swim proficiently and effectively perform lifesaving duties. Ability to assign and supervise pool personnel. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, and to maintain records and prepare reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinate employees, public officials, representatives of civic and community groups, and the general public.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate
Plus one or more of the following will be required as deemed necessary for facility assignment:
Lifeguarding Instructor Certificate
Water Safety Instructor Certificate
Water Aerobics Instructor Certificate
