DESCRIPTION

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part time staff and a budget of $58 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas.

The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised afterschool and weekend activities at parks and schools. In addition, approximately 12,000 youth participate in non-Department sports leagues that utilize park facilities.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is seeking qualified candidates interested in applying for two (2) Aquatics Day Camp Director positions assigned to the Belmont Junior Aquatics Camp at Belmont Plaza Temporary Pool, Bayshore Marine Biology Camp at Bayshore Playground, and Bayclub Teen Camp at Leeway Sailing Center.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Work closely with the Aquatics Supervisor to plan and implement aquatics day camp programming;
  • Assist the Aquatics Supervisor with ongoing staff training and annual in-service training;
  • Supervise staff and aquatics day camp participants;
  • Instruct a variety of swimming classes for camp participants and complete swim lesson evaluations;
  • Monitor and maintain accurate registration and attendance records;
  • Collect excursion fees and submit corresponding reports;
  • Maintain equipment and supplies;
  • Act as lead staff in emergency and rescue situations;
  • Drive to offsite meetings and/or trainings;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

This position is open to all candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Four years of experience working in aquatics or a related field, including one year of experience acting as lead staff in an aquatics program (an equivalent amount of education in a related area may substitute for up to one year);
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, CPR/AED for Lifeguards, and Water Safety Instructor certification is required;
  • Must be at least 18 years of age;
  • Must possess a valid driver's license;
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word is required;
  • Proficiency in the use of the ActiveNet registration program is desirable.

Successful candidates will possess the following:

  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment;
  • Experience working with children and youth with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds is desirable.

This position is temporary and scheduled hours may vary by week on an as-needed basis. From June through August, the successful candidate may work up to 40 hours per week. Non-career employees are not typically eligible for health/dental/vision benefits; however, they may be eligible for sick leave benefits.

The City of Long Beach, Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, Community Recreation Bureau, is seeking applicants for the position of Aquatics Habitat Specialist to work in the El Dorado Nature Center's Aquatics Habitat Outreach Program. The Aquatics Habitat Specialist will coordinate the Adopt-A-Wetland and Adopt-A-Wetland Programs and will supervise staff and deliver naturalist programs at the El Dorado Nature Center. The Aquatics Habitat Specialist will supervise educational staff and volunteer programs at Golden Shore Marine Reserve, and other beach and wetland sites within the City of Long Beach. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The Aquatics Habitat Specialist will perform duties in each of the following programs/areas: Adopt-A-Beach Program * Process applications for community-based volunteer program to clean up the beach; * Collect data and prepare monthly reports for City of Long Beach and Coastal Commission; * Schedule supply pick-ups for groups and coordinate cleanup locations and dates; * Work with state sponsor, the California Coastal Commission; * Other duties as assigned. Adopt-A-Wetland Program * Develop educational curriculum focused on the importance of wetlands and the functions they serve; * Answer calls and communicate with public interested in attending the event; * Run monthly wetland cleanups at Golden Shore Marine Reserve; * Communicate and collaborate with Los Cerritos Wetlands Stewards on maintenance of cleanup supplies and disposal of trash; * Other duties as assigned. California Coastal Cleanup * Coordinate multiple event sites throughout Long Beach for annual event; * Coordinate with state and local organizations on supply ordering and data collection; * Create press releases and marketing tools necessary to promote events; * Distribute and collect liability paperwork for event; * Other duties as assigned. El Dorado Nature Center * Lead educational tours for school and scout groups; * Develop and implement curriculum materials for tours and classes; * Present outreach programs to schools and community groups; * Coordinate and staff special events; * Lead evening programs; * Participate in staff development and professional growth opportunities; * Other duties as assigned. This non-career position is offered at the Recreation Leader Specialist X level at an hourly rate of $21.512. The successful candidate may work up to a maximum of 1600 hours per year, or approximately 26-28 hours per week. Work hours are flexible based upon approval, but candidate must be willing to work weekends and evenings.
