The Aquatic Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Aquatic Director with specific functions related to the Aquatic Department and for making decisions in the absence of the Aquatic Director to ensure a safe and positive atmosphere for all in the pool environment. In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greensboro is responsible for upholding the Judeo-Christian principles that are central to our mission by modeling behaviors that exemplify the four pillars of character - caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

PAY: $16.51-19/hr.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assists with scheduling of lifeguard and/or swim instructors in order to ensure the safety of all participants.

  • Serves as Lifeguard and/or teaches swim lessons as certified and assigned, including substituting for subordinates as necessary, performing all duties of the subordinate positions and job descriptions for which the incumbent is qualified.

  • Manages specifically assigned projects and programs within the Aquatic Department. Some examples of specific projects or programs could include pool maintenance and cleaning or leadership of swim lesson program.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists in supervision of front line employees in the Aquatic Department under the direction of the Aquatic Director. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees and planning and assigning work.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Requires two years experience and training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Requires the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Read and interpret chemical test results.

  • Requires the ability to maintain certification level of physical and mental readiness. Must be able to assertively enforce aquatic rules with a positive customer service approach to the participant. Requires initiative to pro-actively address behavioral concerns with patrons and/or parents, and to proactively communicate Aquatic programs to members. Requires tact in all communication to maintain healthy, positive relationships with all staff and pool patrons.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; sit in an elevated chair; climb into an elevated chair or balance; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear in an environment with significant background noise. The employee is always required to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. The employee is frequently required to walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds in rescue situations.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and ability to see through clear water to the bottom of a pool.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.

  • If the incumbent will be responsible for lifeguarding, they will be required to have current certifications for CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen Administration, as well as current American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard certification. If the primary responsibilities for the incumbent center around swim lessons, they will be required to have YMCA Swim Instructor certification or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification with crossover to Y Swim Instructor certification within 6 months. Certified Pool Operator recommended.
