Summary

The central mission of the Holistic Medicine Service is to serve veterans and their families to improve quality of life. Holistic integrative pain medicine, palliative care and integrative health services are based on respect for persons. The integrative pain medicine, palliative care and complementary integrative health services are academically-based clinical service, research and education programs.
Responsibilities

The incumbent has professional training and experience in delivery of patient care utilizing National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Veterans Affairs (VA) sanctioned CIH mind-body modalities such as, but not limited to, understanding of underlying principles and application of whole medical systems (homeopathic medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda), mind-body medicine (meditation, mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapies, yoga), biologically-based practices, manipulative medicine practices (chiropractic, massage), energy medicine (biofield therapies, bioelectromagnetic-based therapies), at a level sufficient to meet requirements for either certification and/or clinical privileging in such modalities.

The incumbent is able to apply knowledge in the above listed modalities into individual, group, and family therapies used in the treatment of Veterans with chronic pain, depression, anxiety, PTSD and other conditions referred for care in Complementary Integrative Health and Integrative Pain Medicine Clinics.

The incumbent develops and implements methods for measuring effectiveness of Complementary Integrative Health practices and services, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services.

Incumbent is able to demonstrate the ability to design changes based on empirical findings.

The incumbent offers consultation to colleagues and students on use of Complementary Integrative Health treatment modalities, rendering professional opinions based on experience and expertise and role modeling effective practice skills.

The incumbent demonstrates the ability to teach and mentor staff and students in the special area of Complementary Integrative Health and to provide supervision for licensure or specialty certifications.

The incumbent is responsible for instituting functional outcomes measures of Complementary Integrative Health interventions delivered within their scope of practice. Functional measures include physiological, quality of life, and psychological assessment of change.

The incumbent will be responsible for writing IRB applications for more formal research that goes beyond the scope of program and quality assurance as opportunities arise.

The incumbent participates in Grant applications within areas of Complementary Integrative Health expertise.

The incumbent will have other duties as assigned.

Basic

Requirements:

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education . In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Nurse Practitioners. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.] Preferred Experience: Incumbent has at least 2 years of professional experience providing a NIH or VA supported CIH modality in a clinical setting. Incumbent has documented training and or certification in at least one CIH modality. CIH modalities include but not limited to : Yoga, Qigong, Tai Chi, Meditation/Mindfulness, Hypnosis, Guided Imagery, HRV training/biofeedback/Neurofeedback. Cognitive Behavioral Therapies are conventional practices not considered CIH. Incumbent experience and training are at a level sufficient to meet requirements for clinical privileging in such modalities

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I

  • An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
    Nurse I Level II

  • An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
    Nurse I Level III

  • An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
    Nurse II

  • A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
    Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements:
The incumbent must be able to perform all activities of the position without restriction.

This position involves considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and turning. It requires repositioning patients and assisting with transferring patients to wheelchairs/stretchers. Mechanical devices when available are required to be used for heavy or difficult to lift patients.

The work may involve pushing or lifting weight in excess of 50 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs. The position requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective nursing care. The positions requires the nurse to work for periods of time with arms above shoulder level or with the neck in a fully flexed or extended position and the ability to physically control or protect him/herself from physically abusive patients.
