Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Apprentice Technicians are responsible for completing assigned services and/or repairs in an efficient and effective manner.

  • It is the responsibility of the Apprentice Technician to provide workmanship that displays pride and quality as outlined by Lithia's standards.

  • Complete all work according to the applicable safety requirements

  • Road-test vehicles to ensure quality of repair work

  • Document work performed on repair order and document test procedures/results

Qualifications:

  • Time Management- ability to manage one's own

  • Attention to detail

  • Applicants must be 18 or older

  • Operate a wide variety of cars, light trucks, and vans, with ability to drive both manual and automatic transmissions

  • Possess an acceptable driving record and a valid driver's license in your state of residence.

VIEW JOBS 11/2/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-01-31T00:00 JOB SUMMARY: This position acts as a Deckhand Apprentice as part of the Calista-sponsored Alaska Maritime Apprenticeship Program. This position will work as an entry-level Deckhand and will perform general engine room tasks and functions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Perform the job in a safe and seaman-like manner in accordance with all company policies and procedures and state and federal regulations. * Study the safety manual, company policy manual and other material provided by the company. This is essential to smoothly integrate an entry-level deckhand into a useful, safe member of a vessel crew. * Observe and comply with all company safety policies and procedures. * Assist with the loading, lashing, unlashing and discharge of cargo. * Clean the tug and barges, and assist with the handling of fuel and freight. * Act as lookout and maintain watch on deck and in the engine room. * Assist engineer when required. * Handle mooring lines and operate deck machinery. * As knowledge increases and abilities become evident to other crewmembers, increasing levels of responsibility will be given to the deckhand. Attempt only tasks for which he/she has been trained.When in doubt he/she must ask for clarification or instruction on any procedures and/or policies. * Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner. * Perform other special projects and duties as assigned. Job Requirements KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: * Ability to actively listening, including ability to pay attention and listen to instructions; ability to understand points being made, and ask questions at appropriate times, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. * Ability to read, write, and communicate in English. * Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. * Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. * Ability to remain focused and aware of surroundings. * Ability to follow instructions manuals, policies, and procedures. * Ability to work in a safe and alert manner. * Must be able to solve practical problems normally encountered by a deckhand. These include knot selections, hazard avoidance, and safely responding to orders. * Ability to be reliable, responsible, and dependable and able to fulfill obligations. * Ability to accept feedback and criticism. * Ability to be careful about details and thorough in completing work tasks. * Able to perform basis arithmetic, including: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.\ * Ability to attend a 2-week training at AVTEC, if required. * Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner. * Ability to utilize personal protection equipment (PPE) in the manner for which intended. * Ability to use tools and machinery related to performing the functions of the position. QUALIFICATIONS: * High School Diploma or equivalent required. * Ability to pass a Coast Guard Physical. * Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen. * Must obtain Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) by August 15, 2018. * Valid state driver's license and be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the Company's Driving Policy. * Must pass a drug, driving, and background screening. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The length of navigation season in Western and Interior Alaska is dictated by the spring break-up of the ice and the low water and return of ice in late fall. The actual navigation season lasts approximately 180 days. Crews normally work the entire season, 7 days a week, 12 hours per day, without any time off other than vessel downtime. The work can be emotionally challenging and requires a stable, well-adjusted personality. While underway, the deckhand works a 12-hour shift at the direction of the Captain or Chief Mate. PHYSICAL/VISUAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Must be able to pass and maintain a Coast Guard physical exam for merchant mariners. Normal, or corrected to normal vision and hearing are essential for safety reasons. If corrective glasses are worn, a spare pair must be kept on the vessel and a copy of the prescription must be readily available. Physical Effort: Frequent standing, walking, bending, balancing, repetitive use of legs, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, hand-eye coordination. Visual Acuity: Continuous close/distance/color/peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus. Mental Effort: Continuous handling of stress and emotions, concentrating on tasks, discriminating colors. Frequent analytical thinking, effective verbal communication, remembering/examining/observing details, adjusting to changes. Environmental Factors: Frequent exposure to cold and humid temperatures, sharp objects/tools, heavy machinery, dirt/soil, fumes/gases/odors, moving mechanical parts, noise, vibrations, slippery/wet floors/surfaces, working with others.
