Search Applied Research Engineer

You are

  • PhD or Masters in Computer Science or related technical field with 5+ years of experience working on search ranking and machine learning.

  • Well versed in areas such as applied statistics, machine learning, natural language processing, and data mining.

  • A leader. You have years of experience mentoring junior researchers and developing a concept to a product.

  • Proficient with distributed systems like Hadoop and SPARK. You're not necessarily an expert, but you have experience processing large datasets in such frameworks.

  • A polyglot programmer. You probably have a favorite language like Scala, Python or R but you can jump in and write some Java or C as needed.

  • Results oriented. Research is great but at the end of the day you want to see your creation live and breathe.

You will

  • Be directly responsible for improving search recall and ranking via query understanding and machine learned ranking models that power the end-end search experience at eBay.

  • Showcase the spectrum of value in the world's most diverse ecommerce inventory, by improving whole page relevance, query recommendations, spell corrections, synonym/acronym expansions, and query rewrites.

  • Conceptualize, code, deploy, and iterate on designs from prototypes all the way through to production systems.

  • Analyze petabytes of real-world behavioral data to understand patterns and trends.

  • Transform data insights into actionable reports, targeting algorithms, and model features.

  • Provide technical leadership in statistical analysis, data mining, machine learning, NLP, and information retrieval.

  • Work jointly with architecture, engineering, quality engineering, and operations teams to deliver complex applications.

  • Focus on our biggest opportunities in search, convert them into applied science problem statements, and then develop end-to-end solutions.

  • Directly see the results of your applied research improving and powering the experience of eBay's core search platform across the globe.

This is an opportunity to build a visible impact in an eBay growth business by using your extensive Research and Engineering talents to work on some of the most complex and innovative problems in AdTech and E-Commerce and develop new features that promote enthusiastic engagement in our large and growing base of sellers and buyers. Responsibilities: * Develop machine learning systems using both cutting edge data science and engineering skills. * Strong understanding of/experience with Machine learning. Stay current with the recent developments in AI and Machine Learning (e.g. Deep Learning, automatic Hyper-Parameter Optimization) * Extensive experience with at ML learning software such as TensorFlow, pyTorch, Torch, H2O, Theano,, R, etc. * Extensive experience with building production data pipelines using technologies such as Spark, Scala, Storm, Kafka, etc. * Ability to prep a cluster for developing and deploying ML models. Familiarity with Kubernetes and Docker is a plus. * A scrappy, practical approach to solving specific product problems as opposed to developing theoretical or general solutions. * Experience collaborating with designers, product managers, business analysts and other developers as part of a highly cross-functional team. * Familiarity with SDLC process, agile development. * Familiarity with QE concepts. Able to QE his/her work. Job Requirements and Qualifications: * MS in computer science (PhD preferred) or equivalent experience. * Extensive experience with Big Data storage and analysis technologies, such as Hadoop, data warehouse platforms and NoSQL solutions. * R&D background in machine learning, statistics, or information retrieval * Industry familiarity in the computational advertising space. Areas such as audience modeling and extension of real-time bidding, is a big plus. * Strong programming skills in Java, Scala, or Python. * Experience with common data analysis tools, such as R. * Proven track record of turning prototypes into live production systems with measurable business benefits. * A demonstrated record of delivering projects in the face of significant ambiguity. * Excellent communication skills. eBay is a Subsidiary of eBay.
