DESCRIPTION:

The RBC Division is in search of an Application/Design Engineer to be located in our corporate office in Oxford, CT. The successful candidate will be responsible for both design and application of spherical plain bearings reporting to the SPB Product Engineering group leader.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

  • Work directly with RBC customers to satisfy their application needs. Support our external sales and business management personnel by making visits to customers to promote RBC's capabilities.

  • Convert customer requirements into bearing designs.

  • Derive application loading, cycles, and other operating conditions relevant to the bearing application. Based on these inputs, select or alter existing bearing designs to meet customer requirements.

  • Develop new bearing designs as needed.

  • Participate in DFMEA, PFMEA events related to product/design application.

  • When needed, develop bearing testing requirements for validation of a proposed design. Work closely with test engineers in conducting validation testing.

  • Develop manufacturing, grinding, and assembly drawings using SolidWorks.

  • Understand heat treatment specifications as they relate to the bearing designs.

  • Work directly with our manufacturing plants to ensure the proper production of the product designed.

  • Work with the manufacturing division personnel to develop methods of bearing inspection.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree with major in engineering field required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 3-10 years as Mechanical Engineer or related experience.

  • Bearing experience is preferred.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude.

SKILLS/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors Degree in an engineering field. Mechanical Engineering preferred.

  • US citizenship is required.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude.

  • Excellent communication skills, capability to interact with customers.

  • 3D Modeling experience in SolidWorks (or equivalent) is desired.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Programs.

  • Travel Approximately 25%

The person will be expected to act as consultant and metallurgical expert to all divisions of RBC, as necessary, responding to queries about materials, material acceptability, specifications, failure investigations, material performance improvements and material quality issues both internal and with our supplier base. The successful applicant will be expected to take a leadership role in material development as RBC expands its current product offering into new applications with structural and environmental challenges beyond our current knowledgebase and capability. The candidate is required to have excellent inter personal and communication skills, be a team player that is driven to succeed within in a fast paced, challenging, and demanding environment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB: * New Product Development: Research and Development of performance enhancing materials and material heat treatments. * Design: Support RBC engineers on materials selection and evaluation, testing, fabrication, heat treatment, and plating. * Manufacturing: Support the evaluation of material quality, obtain and maintain NADCAP heat treat accreditation where required, consult and assist with internal/external customer concerns regarding product quality, customer audits and approvals, materials and testing, failure analysis, destructive testing, procedures, evaluation of vendors for heat treating and plating. * Metallurgical Analysis: Improve existing metallurgical laboratory and maintain a list of vendors that can provide services outside of the labs capabilities. * Manage Corporate Metallurgy Function: Conduct bi-weekly department update meetings, coordinate the projects of two Fellow level metallurgists with more than 80 years combined experience, and oversee a lab. Technician. * Oxford Heat Treat Department: Technically oversee and support a newly implemented heat treat department within the Oxford, CT, manufacturing facilities. EDUCATION: * BS/MS/PhD in Metallurgy, or Metallurgical Engineering, or Materials Science. * 10 + years of related experience. EXPERIENCE: * Expertise in metallurgy, thermal processing, machining, chemical processing, plating, stress relieving, material standards, material processing and potential process changes affecting material performance. * Keen knowledge of the causes of fatigue and failure of metals, especially -- but not limited to – the field of bearings. * Anticipate travel requirements to various customers, suppliers, and RBC facilities of approximately 25%.
