The Application Developer is part of the Enterprise Applications team within the Information Technology Department at Vanderbilt University. The Application Developer is an individual contributor responsible for the implementation of integrations, APIs, and software applications using departmental standards and industry best practices. Utilizing both cloud and traditional development/hosting environments, application developers design, code, test, debug, and document software.

The Enterprise Applications team is charged with maintaining Vanderbilt's mission-critical applications and working strategically across the University to build efficient, repeatable business processes. This team functions in a highly collaborative way, with a culture focused on supporting each other in getting the right work done the right way.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Development:

  • Demonstrates proficiency in programming and other development tasks independently and without support from others for moderate to difficult applications

  • Possesses the ability to debug complex routines

Standards and Procedures:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of applications, development standards, and procedures of moderate difficulty

  • Is attentive to industry standards and procedures

  • May recommend improvements to existing standards and procedures within the work area

System Analysis:

  • Demonstrates the ability to conduct systems analysis tasks in a team environment or independently to build or enhance a simple system

  • Possesses the ability to decompose complex issues into meaningful and manageable parts

System Design:

  • Has knowledge of or light exposure to basic systems design tasks such as designing system architecture and flow, preparing functional design and file specifications, designing new documents, screens, and reports, preparing program requirements and specifications, and preparing implementation and testing plans

  • Has worked with transaction, object-oriented, graphical user interface, and other concepts and architectures

  • In terms of structured systems design, if applicable, has had classroom training or independent study in principles of structured design

  • Understands concepts such as cohesion, coupling, data flow, graphics, etc.

Supervisory Relationships:

This is an individual contributor role, reporting administratively and functionally to the Academic Application Development Manager.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary

  • At least 2 years of programming experience with Java (or other object-oriented language) is necessary

  • Proficiency in Object-Oriented design is necessary

  • At least 1 year of experience with SQL is necessary

  • At least 1 year of experience with the Spring Framework is preferred

  • At least 1 year of experience with Cloud technologies is preferred

  • Experience with multiple of the following preferred:

  • J2EE / JSP Web Apps, Spring Core/WS/Security/Boot/Batch, JSON/YAML/XML, SOAP/REST, JavaScript/React, Eclipse/VS Code/IntelliJ, Maven/Gradle, Jira/Bamboo/Artifactory, Docker, Git/SVN, MyBatis/Liquibase, NOSQL Database, AWS Cloud Formation Templates/SAM/CDK, AWS EC2/ECS/Kubernetes, AWS Lambda, AWS API Gateway/Cognito, AWS SQS, AWS S3
