Job Description:

This position requires the clinical instructor to oversee student clinical treatment as well as assist and evaluate the student's technical skills in assessment, dental hygiene diagnosis, care planning, instrumentation, evaluation of care and documentation. The instructor must be knowledgeable in current trends in dentistry and must provide high quality instruction.

The instructor must have a demonstrated knowledge of and integration of appropriate practices of teaching diverse learners. The instructor must demonstrate calibration in clinical and assessment skills. Manage a clinical section, including organizing and presenting material, demonstrating skills and activities that will facilitate student learning, and monitoring student behavior and performance.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • This position requires clinical and/or online instruction in the discipline. The instructor must be knowledgeable in current trends in dentistry and must provide high quality instruction.

  • This position requires the individual to have the ability to: 1. Work with a diverse group of students. 2.

    Integrate diverse methodologies in order to facilitate student learning. 3. Understand the needs of community college students. 4.

    Manage a clinical section, including organizing and presenting material, demonstrating skills and activities that will facilitate student learning, and monitoring student behavior and performance. 5.

    Follow instructions and meet deadlines. 6. Recognize students' strengths and weaknesses in the discipline and to provide feedback to students in such a way as to facilitate their learning. 7. Evaluate student work fairly using Department guidelines. 8. Master communication skills with students and clinical patients

Essential Functions:

  • TEACHES CLASSES 1. Follows the syllabus and manuals for the class, utilizes the evaluation procedures that falls within the parameters of the clinic/lab and follows the calendar of assignments in accordance with the course outline/syllabus. 2.

    Prepares for the clinic/lab session using the Department-approved text(s) and manuals. 3. Follows Department guidelines for clinical deportment, professionalism, ethics and best practices. 4.

    Meets classes on all scheduled dates during the assigned semester. 5.

    Meets classes on time and holds classes for their fully allotted time. 6. If teaching online, respects the Owens Community College Standards for Web Instruction. 7. Uses appropriate classroom management techniques. 8. Uses appropriate means and methods of technology.

  • CREATES AND MAINTAINS ASSIGNMENTS, EVALUATIVE MEASURES, AND RECORDS 1. Creates and evaluates assignments, evaluative measures, and activities appropriate to the class. 2.

    Assigns grades to student work. 3. Returns the graded assignments, evaluative measures, and activities to the students in a timely manner. Maintains the general guideline of returning student work and posting grades within a week. 4.

    Maintains accurate and thorough records of student attendance. 5. Reports student attendance as required, by the published deadline if scheduled as the lead instructor. 6. Maintains an accurate and thorough electronic grade book if scheduled as the lead instructor. 7.

    At the end of the term, reports grades to the Records Office by the deadline and submits electronic copies of grade book and attendance to the Department course management site, if scheduled as the lead instructor. 8. Administers course evaluations as instructed by the College.

  • COMMUNICATES EFFECTIVELY 1. Uses the College's course management system for assigned courses and department matters as appropriate. 2.

    Uses MS Office Suite and/or other required (and Owens-system-compatible and approved) programs. 3. Submits electronic copies of all requested documents (including syllabi, grade books, attendance records, and other files as required) to the Dental Hygiene Department Secretary or electronically to the Department Course Management site. 4. Accesses Owens email account at least every other day to communicate adequately with students and with the Department Chair.

    Maintains the general guideline of reading and replying to all required messages within 48 hours. 5. Checks campus mailbox at least once a week. 6. Responds to student inquiries outside of class in a timely manner. 7. Is available to meet additionally with students outside of class, if necessary.

  • ENGAGES IN OTHER DEPARTMENT-RELATED ACTIVITIES 1. Attends Department and College workshops, training sessions, and development activities as needed. 2.

    Attends Department and College meetings as necessary. 3. Participates in student learning assessment activities. 4. Performs other departmental duties, as assigned.

  • Attends teaching methodologies courses annually to comply with Accreditation Standards. Faculty must also take continuing education related to the course in which they are teaching to comply with the Commission on Dental Accreditation Standards.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Associate degree or two-year technical certificate - Dentistry or Dental Hygiene.

  • Must have taken teaching methodologies courses. Has worked in the field for 2 years.

    Must take continuing education related to the course in which they are teaching. Must participate in clinical calibration sessions following accreditation standards.

  • Current dental license or dental hygiene license as well as Local Anesthetic & Nitrous oxide administration certification. Current CPR card. Must be a member of the professional association (ADA, ADHA, ODEFA).
