Job Description:


This full time position is part of a team of a number of Complaint and Appeal Nurse Analysts and Complaint and Appeal Analysts. Our team provides comprehensive post-service utilization management review for providers.

Part of our team also reviews cases that are DRG assignment contracts. All of our Complaint and Appeal Nurse Analysts are provided on the job training, and work collaboratively with a preceptor.

Fundamental Components:

Review clinical appeals from participating inpatient and outpatient Medicare Advantage providers. Make medical necessity recommendations based on industry standards, MCG or InterQual guidelines; CMS Guidelines, or Aetna Clinical Policy Bulletins.

Exposure to a wide variety of clinical appeal issues. Review post service Legacy Aetna and Legacy Coventry provider appeal requests.

Collaborate with Aetna medical directors. Become a subject matter expert with regard to the Centers for Medicare & Medicare Services Guidelines, Industry medical necessity guidelines of MCG and/or InterQual. Contribute to Aetnas strong Medicare star quality ratings.


  • Managed Care experience preferred

  • 3-5 years of clinical experience required

  • Appeals/Utilization Management experience; Preferred


The minimum level of education required for candidates in this position is an Associate's degree.


Nursing/Registered Nurse in the State of Residence is required

Appeals is the last opportunity for the IRS and a taxpayer to resolve disputes prior to litigation, and ensures that all taxpayers can receive an impartial review of their tax case. As an Appeals Officer you provide the final administrative opportunity for taxpayers to resolve tax disputes without litigation by applying the hazards of litigation and using a Quasi-Judicial approach. A fair, impartial administration of the tax laws contributes significantly to taxpayer cooperation and voluntary compliance. Additionally, at this level, the Appeals Officer is responsible for working with the most highly skilled and technically proficient Appeals and IRS Compliance employees, as well as external taxpayers and representatives. As an Appeals Officer AQMS Reviewer you will: * Performs closed case reviews using Appeals Quality Standards and Attributes (AQSA). Decides nature and extent of review necessary. Interprets and applies AQSA using the Appeals Quality Measurement Standards Guideline. * Evaluates Appeals case work by the application of closed case review standards and related specific attributes and procedures as defined by the Guideline. Determines whether conclusions reached by Appeals are consistent with tax law, procedure and policy requirements. * Manages and coordinates assigned programs and projects. Acts as a contact point for related program activities. Develops and distributes instructional material when appropriate. Prepares, maintains and updates technical/desk procedures. Conducts research, and provides guidance, feedback, reports and analyses on program operations and results. * Analyzes and reviews case files, supporting documents and other information for adequate factual and technical development of issues; the proper application of tax law, Appeals policies and procedures; and appropriate case resolution and settlement. * Works with team members to identify ways to improve the quality review process. Promotes team concept through a variety of ways that may include coaching other team members and sharing best practices or institutional knowledge. Maintains appropriate liaison and professional contact with other divisions of IRS. * Keeps current with significant changes in the Internal Revenue Code, regulations, the IRM, court decisions, and other tax publications which relate to assigned areas of responsibilities. * As required may be designated to perform other duties associated with the closed case review process and serve as a technical advisor. * Performs other duties as assigned.
