ANTICIPATED SCHOOL COUNSELOR

REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Building Assistant Principals

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid New Jersey Student Personnel Services Certification or School Counselor Certification or eligibility required.

  • Knowledge of testing specifications and testing materials, schedules and interpreting data.

  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction, based upon student learning styles.

  • Excellent communication and counseling skills and ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans especially as it pertains to MTSS/I&RS and 504 plans.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.

  • Ability to work effectively with students, families, staff, and community.

  • Successful experience in diverse environments, preferred.

  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed as well as organize and coordinate work.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead group counseling.

JOB GOAL:

Middle school counselors are educators uniquely trained in child and adolescent development, learning strategies, self-management and social skills. They implement a school counseling program to provide education, prevention, and intervention activities, which are integrated into all aspects of students' lives. Middle school counselors work with students to develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for their academic and social/emotional development and success.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To identify, develop and execute short-term educational-based individual and small group counseling for all students.

Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the use of teacher comments, interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data and then work with students in evolving educational plans and goals.

  • Maintains all types of required student records and ensures their confidentiality. Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping.

  • Member of MTSS/I&RS/RTI

  • To act as the liaison between the school and community agencies in working on student problems.

  • Coordinates with administrators and other teaching staff members to ascertain individual student's abilities and needs for all students, and to familiarize stakeholders with school counseling services.

  • Works closely with teachers, administrators and other professional staff members, providing information and assistance where needed for the ultimate benefit of students.

  • Maintains a collaborative relationship with the Child Study Team.

  • Works closely with and involves parents in student educational plans, and assists in the resolution of school-related problems. Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.

  • Schedules students new to the school, provide orientation and information relative to school procedures, curriculum, and extracurricular opportunities.

  • Serves as a ready resource to students to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity. Makes effective use of community and staff resources and coordinates services with other staff in order to increase the benefits for students.

  • Maintains a professional office environment, appropriate relationships with students, and positive relationships with the building administration, parents, and other staff.

  • Provides for a smooth transition from middle school to high school and elementary school to middle school.

  • Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through in-service education and other professional growth activities. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.

  • Implements the Middle School counseling curriculum and plan/evaluate the counseling program yearly.

  • Performs duties within the scope of his/her employment and certification as may be assigned or required by state law and board policies.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and work year to be determined as mutually agreed upon in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
