Anticipated Vacancy

Title: Transportation Dispatcher

Qualifications:

  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Two or more years of school transportation experience is desired. This experience shall immediately precede the application for this job description's position.

  • Hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with Passenger (P) Endorsement.

  • Have an excellent driving record with minimal, if any, infractions.

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Possess strong knowledge of Windows operating systems, web-based maps, and databases; proven experience in using various office applications including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word, Excel,PowerPoint and Google Suite systems.

  • Must have knowledge of bus routing systems

  • Knowledge of Federal and State laws pertaining to student transportation

  • Exceptional ability to provide a positive work ethic and attitude in stressful situations.

  • Critical Thinking: Think critical in their process of task management.

  • Clear criminal background check given by the New Jersey Department of Education.

  • Pass state required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test

  • Troubleshooting: Be able to find the root cause of issues and think logically about solutions.

  • Critical Thinking: Think critically in their process of task management. This individual must discern how to prioritize tasks.

Responsibilities:

  • In the provision of student transportation services, accurately and efficiently perform a wide variety of tasks ensuring effective and efficient utilization of bus drivers, bus aides, and vehicles including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Plan and schedule daily bus route coverage, sub-driver assignments, and field trip/extracurricular trip assignments.

  • Maintain regular daily communications with contracted bus service providers to ensure uninterrupted services and plan for coverage where required.

  • Dispatch bus drivers and bus aides to assist with preventing service disruptions.

  • Monitor traffic reports and notifies bus drivers of traffic conditions that may affect bus schedules, and advise bus drivers of alternate routes when required.

  • Notify schools and management of bus delays.

  • Monitor and communicate effectively through two-way radios and telephones.

  • Available on a 24/7 basis to respond to crisis events and weather emergencies, and be readily reachable while District school buses are in operation.

  • Maintain accurate daily operations logs, record infractions by contracted vendors, and present records to management on a regular recurring basis.

  • In the event of an accident, incident or serious problem, promptly communicate the matter to the Transportation Supervisor. In the case of an accident, follow the established accident procedure, which includes notification to the Business Administrator and the school as soon as possible.

  • On a regular basis, inspect District-owned vehicles for cleanliness.

  • Drive bus as may be required in emergency situations or when staff is limited.

  • Receive telephone and two-way radio reports of bus accidents and breakdowns, and promptly informs the police department and the Transportation Supervisor. Respond to serious incidents in accordance with established procedure.

  • Assist in accurately maintaining bus routes and student data, and implementing bus route and schedule changes in transportation routing program.

  • Appropriately respond to management and parent inquiries.

  • Assist management in responding to emergency situations for the purpose of ensuring the safety of students, staff and equipment.

  • Assist in planning and presenting training sessions.

  • Assist in the evaluation of department employees.

  • Coordinate with mechanic services the repair and maintenance of District-owned school buses.

  • Direct mechanic services, tow truck operators, and other necessary resources to assist with disabled District-owned vehicles, and arrange for the continuation of bus services.

  • Coordinate with his/her immediate supervisor and/or designees for the purpose of efficiently and effectively completing tasks.

  • Coordinate the work of and with other employees for the purpose of supporting efficient and effective department operations.

  • Provide feedback and make recommendations regarding equipment and supplies to be requested/ordered during annual budget cycle for new fiscal year.

  • Inform management regarding procedures and/or status of employees and equipment for the purpose of providing information for making decisions, taking appropriate action and/or complying with federal, New Jersey state, and Board of Education requirements.

  • Participate in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars, as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.

  • Prepare written materials (i.e., incident reports, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.

  • Request equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items required for the maintenance of school buses and the provision of transportation services.

  • Accurately read, decipher, and work from printed and electronic media.

  • Research, requisition, store, safeguard, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies.

  • Keep accurate records of equipment used, work performed, and time spent utilizing the means and methods directed by management.

  • Remember and carry out oral and written directions, tasks, and procedures.

  • Demonstrate a positive and cooperative attitude; appropriate grooming and attire; and, effective work ethic.

  • Protect and maintain confidentiality of records and information about staff, students, and district operations, and only disclose said information within the right legal confines and with management approval.

  • Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs and attend any required meetings, briefings, and training sessions.

  • Adhere to the standards for responsibilities association with this position; Board of Education Policies and Regulations; and District and Department procedures and protocols.

  • Perform all duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor, or designee, as otherwise not prohibited by law or regulation.
