The ANSEP Summer Bridge focuses on developing students, socially and professionally for college and careers. The Summer Bridge is a college and career visioning opportunity that's geared toward students who are graduating high school this academic year.

Summer Bridge students participate in training workshops and work a paid summer internship in the engineering, science, or business field with one of the ANSEP Strategic Partners. Students also engage in extracurricular activities to build connections with peers attending the University of Alaska. Within Summer Bridge, the ANSEP Youth Peer Mentor (YPM) position plays a pivotal role in supporting personal and professional development of students.

This YPM position is responsible for student professional and social activities, student residence life experiences, departmental duties, compliance in risk management aimed at ANSEP students, ANSEP van driving and more. The YPM works closely with students, ANSEP Summer Directors, and ANSEP Directors to ensure student's programming needs are met.

The candidate should also be a responsible employee under Title IX and stay current with annual training.

To excel in this position, the candidate should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, as they will be mentoring students and communicating with stakeholders as directed by their supervisor. The candidate should have detailed knowledge of careers in science, engineering, or business fields.

They should have a deep understanding of academic content, university policies, and FERPA regulation. The candidate will need excellent organizational skills, the ability to handle student support services, and the capacity to plan academic and extracurricular activities. The candidate should be comfortable driving in Alaska road conditions in all seasons. The candidate should be able to work night and weekend shifts as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduation required.

  • Minimum of 20 university credits successfully completed is required.

  • Knowledge of or experience with careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or business preferred.

  • One year prior experience working with or overseeing students in residence programs is preferred.

  • Evidence of leadership, work ethic, integrity and high moral standards.

  • Knowledge of or experience with rural Alaska culture, lifestyles and challenges preferred.

  • Knowledge of or experience supporting youth in an education setting.

  • Evidence of the ability to communicate effectively and work as a team player.

  • Current Alaska Driver's License and clean driving record to drive ANSEP van transporting students as needed.

  • Must be 18 or older to apply and 21 or older to drive.

Position Details:

This position is for the University of Alaska Anchorage, ANSEP. The work will be primarily performed in Anchorage, this position will start early May 2024 until run no later than August 10th 2024.

This is a full-time, temporary, non-exempt staff position, reduced hours may be available depending on the needs of the program. Please attach a resume, cover letter, and the names and contact information for three (3) professional references with your application.

This position may require driving an ANSEP vehicle. A valid AK drivers license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria is required. Must be 21 or older by May 5th, 2024 to drive.

Must be able to lift or move up to 50 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Position may require night and weekend shifts as well as some off site field trips.
