Anml Health Tchn 2 (Instructional Support Facilitator)

Under supervision and direction of Gourley Facility Manager, lead evening AHT, faculty, and technician coordinators. Assist in facilitating didactic and clinical teaching activities at the Gourley Clinical Teaching Center (GCTC). Conduct animal procurement, specimen preparation, maintaining supplies and equipment, minor animal husbandry duties, administration of treatments per clinician orders, set-up and clean-up of live animal and cadaver student didactic labs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Handle/maneuver/lift equipment, materials, animals, cadavers, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.

• Work where hazardous or infectious materials are present. Health status sufficient to be certified to use a cartridge-type respirator. May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

• Stand for extended periods of time; walk, crouch, and kneel throughout the shift.

• Drive large size animal transport vans between various locations on and off campus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Must work in an environment where animals are used in teaching and research. Contact with animals, including the restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) as required. Restrain equine and livestock species; ability to halter, load and unload animals in transport trailers and place them in and out of stocks/stanchions and head gates. Move animals on and off gurneys, into and out of cages, transport vans, stalls and holding pens, and transfer heavy equipment from area to area.

• Required to work variable or long hours on short notice, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, covering staff shortages and holiday shifts. Good attendance habits are crucial. Vacations may be restricted during the academic year.

• Work in high traffic areas with constant noise from animals and people in a fast-paced, constantly changing, and heavy volume patient-care environment.

• Work in an environment where animals are used for teaching. Work in a shelter animal environment.

• Work with animal cadavers and preserved animal specimens.

• Work under regular exposure to animal odors, zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, and cleaning chemicals typical of an animal hospital environment.

• May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught students and staff.

• May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

• This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

• Work at other related areas and Animal Sciences facilities on an as-needed basis.

• Participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

• Experience working in a clinical animal hospital environment, shelter, or other animal care related field.

• Experience with disinfection and disease control practices in a multi-species hospital, laboratory, or shelter.

• Experience performing animal observations and treatments on a wide variety of species, such as: dogs, cats, small mammals, livestock, horses, reptiles, and birds.

• Experience handling, restraining, cleaning, feeding, and housing of various species such as: dogs, cats, small mammals, livestock, horses, reptiles, and birds.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

• Proficiency in pharmacology, anesthetic action, and management to allow instruction and independent use of both classified and non-classified drugs to safely maintain and recover animals under anesthesia.

• Proficiency in administering PO, IV, IP, SQ, and IM injections, and performing intravenous venipunctures and catheterization on a variety of species.

• Proficiency in aseptic technique and O.R. etiquette.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification:

• Current California R.V.T. license.

Preferred Education/Experience:

• Experience demonstrating and teaching veterinary clinical skills at a college or university.

• Experience working in an environment with USDA covered animals and IACUC protocols.

• Experience performing anatomical dissection for teaching.
